Cyclone Relief

Tamil Nadu: Cyclone Michaung lashed Tamil Nadu on 5 December causing floods. In the wake of the calamity, the following centres conducted relief operations as detailed below:

  • Chennai Math distributed 6000 kg rice, 2000 kg semolina, 2000 kg pulses, 2000 litres cooking oil, 1000 kg sambar powder, 200 kg turmeric powder, 2000 packets of biscuits, 1000 kg sugar, 8000 litres drinking water, 4000 candles, 2000 matchboxes and 530 blankets among 2000 families in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) districts from 21 to 28 December.
  • Madurai centre distributed, in collaboration with Chennai Math, 15,550 kg rice, 3250 kg semolina, 2000 kg wheat flour, 3500 kg pulses, 3270 litres cooking oil, 500 kg sambar powder, 325 kg tamarind powder, 3350 kg assorted spices, 3010 kg salt, 4000 packets of biscuits, 1625 kg sugar, 2000 litres drinking water, 2000 candles and 2000 matchboxes among 3800 families in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts from 20 to 28 December.

Flood Relief

West Bengal: Incessant rainfalls and a cloudburst on 3 October caused a breach in the South Lhonak Lake in Sikkim, leading to flash floods in the Teesta River.  The floods badly affected the Teesta Bazar area in Kalimpong district of West Bengal.  In the wake of the calamity, Darjeeling centre distributed 150 pressure cookers, 150 kadais, 150 saucepans, 150 hot pots, 600 plates, 600 tumblers, 150 ladles, 150 spatulas, 600 spoons, 150 buckets, 300 mugs, 150 bottles of hair oil, 3000 sachets of shampoo, 300 bars of bathing soap, 150 bars of dishwashing soap, 150 kg detergent powder, 150 tubes of toothpaste, 600 toothbrushes, 150 diapers, 100 school bags, 200 notebooks, 100 pens, 100 pencils, 100 erasers, 100 rulers, 200 mattresses, 400 pillows, 400 pillow covers, 200 bedsheets and 250 blankets among 150 families in Kalimpong district from 11 October to 7 January.


Disturbance Relief

Manipur: Continuing its relief operations among the victims of ethnic clashes which began in May, Imphal centre distributed the following items from 29 December to 27 January in 19 relief camps and 4 other areas among 931 families from Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching and Bishnupur districts: 40 kg pulses, 10 kg chira (rice flakes), 10 kg semolina, 20 kg soya chunks, 4320 packets of biscuits, 8 kg Horlicks, 15 kg infant milk, 52 kg milk powder, 60 bottles of hair oil, 100 bars of bathing soap, 9 kg detergent powder, 60 tubes of toothpaste, 24 toothbrushes, 661 pairs of socks, 1105 thermal uppers, 422 thermal trousers, 170 shawls, 95 blankets, 16 pairs of shoes, 114 notebooks, 11 rechargeable bulbs and other miscellaneous items.

Economic Rehabilitation

(i) ManipurImphal centre provided 350 kg of potato sprouts, 120 kg green pea seeds, 35 kg rajma seeds and 20 kg coriander seeds to 250 farmers at Sugnu in Kakching district from 29 December to 27 January.

(ii) Tamil NaduThanjavur Math handed over 3 sewing machines to as many poor women in Thanjavur on 24 January.

(iii) West BengalRahara centre gave away 3 sewing machines and 2 cycle vans to 5 needy families in North 24 Parganas district from 3 to 6 January.
