Activities 2023-24 : Medical Work


Ramakrishna Math

a. Medical Units: In the year under review, the Math had the following medical and allied units.

b. Specialized medical treatments: The following special treatments were provided by some of our centres through their hospitals, dispensaries, special programmes, camps, etc:

  • Eye treatment was rendered by our centres at Chennai (Math), Halasuru, Naora, Rajkot, and others. Besides, many centres have a separate eye department attached to their dispensaries.
  • Leprosy detection and treatment was done by Chennai Math.
  • Maternity and child welfare services were provided by our hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and by some dispensaries.
  • Physiotherapy treatment was provided by our centres at Ghatshila and Nagpur. Rajkot centre has a special clinic for providing physiotherapy treatment to cerebral palsy children.
  • Psychiatry treatment was provided in our Thiruvananthapuram hospital and by some dispensaries.
  • Tuberculosis cases were treated at Chennai Math, Ichapur and Pune centres.
  • Medical camps: In the eye camps, 8711 patients were operated on for cataract and 1337 patients were given spectacles free of all charges. Programmes like leprosy and TB eradication, and medical camps for other ailments were also conducted by various centres. Besides, many centres had special departments for dental surgery, ENT, cardiology, paediatrics, acupressure and acupuncture.

The total expenditure incurred on medical work in 2023-24 was Rs. 59.32 crore.

b. Specialized medical treatments: The following special treatments were provided by some of our centres through their hospitals, dispensaries, special programmes, camps, etc:

  • Eye treatment was rendered by our centres at Bankura, Belagavi, Gurap, Kamarpukur, Khetri, Porbandar, and others, and at the hospitals in Dehradun, Kankhal, Lucknow, Muzaffarpur, Vrindavan, etc. Besides, many centres have a separate eye department attached to their dispensaries.
  • Leprosy detection and treatment was done by the Headquarters (Belur Math) and our centres at Kamarpukur, Lucknow and others.
  • Maternity and child welfare services were provided by our hospitals in Kolkata (Seva Pratishthan), Lucknow and Vrindavan, and by some dispensaries.
  • Neurology departments functioned at the hospitals in Kolkata (Seva Pratishthan), Lucknow, Varanasi, etc.
  • Physiotherapy treatment was provided by the Headquarters (Belur Math) and the centres at Bhopal, Indore, Itanagar, Kolkata (Seva Pratishthan), Lucknow, New Delhi, Prayagraj, Shillong, Varanasi, Vrindavan, and others. The centre at Visakhapatnam has a special clinic for providing physiotherapy treatment to cerebral palsy children.
  • Psychiatry treatment was provided in our Itanagar, Kolkata (Seva Pratishthan), Lucknow, Raipur and Vrindavan hospitals and by some dispensaries.
  • Tuberculosis cases were treated at the 200-bed sanatorium in Ranchi, the TB clinic run by Delhi centre at Karol Bagh, the dispensary at Headquarters (Belur Math) and our medical units at Itanagar, Kamarpukur, Kankhal, Lucknow, Malda, Narainpur, Patna, etc.
  • Medical camps: In the eye camps, 29,946 patients were operated on for cataract and 2838 patients were given spectacles free of all charges. Programmes like leprosy and TB eradication, and medical camps for other ailments were also conducted by various centres. Besides, 6087 units of blood were collected from 6182 voluntary blood donors through 101 blood donation camps.

Besides, many centres had special departments for dental surgery, ENT, cardiology, paediatrics, acupressure, acupuncture, and the like. Several centres also provided panchakarma treatment.

The Mission spent a sum of Rs. 437.38 crore towards medical service.
