Vedanta Society of Northern California, San Francisco

Event Overview:

On Saturday, April 14, 2025, the Vedanta Society of Northern California marked the 125th anniversary of its founding by Swami Vivekananda in San Francisco. The celebration took place at the Society’s New Temple, inaugurating a yearlong series of special programs to honor this historic milestone.

Historical Background:

Swami Vivekananda stayed in the San Francisco Bay Area from February to May 1900.  During that time he lectured, gave classes, and personally inspired many people. A group formed in San Francisco and on April 14 they officially organized the “Vedanta Class”, which later became known as the Vedanta Society of San Francisco, now known as “Vedanta Society of Northern California”. Swami Vivekananda himself attended that meeting and blessed the gathering.

Foundation Day Ceremony:

• A large, historic photograph of Swami Vivekananda-taken at the time of the Society’s inception in 1900-was unveiled by Swami Tattwamayananda to honor Swamiji’s enduring legacy.

• The program included traditional puja (worship) performed by Swami Aparananda,  devotional music, and a commemorative address by Swami Tattwamayananda, who highlighted the significance of the Society’s founding and its impact on spiritual life in the West.

Attendance and Participation:

• Over 150 devotees, including monks and nuns from nearby Vedanta centers, attended the event, reflecting the Society’s continued role as a spiritual hub in Northern California.

Commemorative Series:

• This event was the first in a series of special programs scheduled from April 2025 through April 2026, celebrating the Society’s 125th anniversary and its contributions to Vedanta philosophy and interfaith understanding in America.

Historical Context:

• The Vedanta Society of Northern California was established by Swami Vivekananda on April 14, 1900, to promote the study and practice of Vedanta philosophy. Its founding marked a significant moment in the spread of Hindu spiritual teachings in California.

The unveiling ceremony and associated events set the tone for a year of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to Swami Vivekananda’s vision, uniting devotees and spiritual seekers in celebrating 125 years of Vedanta in Northern California.
