A series of events marked the commemoration of Swami Vivekananda’s visit to Thanjavur and Kumbakonam (February 3, 4, 5 in 1897), including a significant marathon and a Silambam tournament.
Marathon Race (Aaduthurai):
A marathon race, jointly organized by the Thanjavur Ramakrishna Math and the Aaduthurai selection grade panchayat, formed a key part of the celebrations. Puducherry State Law Secretary, L.S. Sathyamurthy, and Sri. Raju, Police DSP, Thiruvaiyaru, flagged off the race, which saw enthusiastic participation from over a thousand runners. Participants wore T-shirts featuring Swami Vivekananda’s image and the inspiring slogan “Arise, Awake.”
Silambam Tournament (Thanjavur):
A one-day Silambam tournament, showcasing the traditional Tamil martial art, was held in Thanjavur. Around 300 Silambam athletes competed for various prizes. All participants received a portrait of Swami Vivekananda and a selection of his books.
