The recent cyclone, Fengal, has caused severe damage in Puducherry, Villupuram district, and surrounding areas. Three lakes and a river dam breached their danger levels, flooding many villages and cutting them off from the roads. Electricity and internet services have also been significantly affected.
On December 2, 2024, Ramakrishna Mission, Villupuram, began its initial relief efforts in both Villupuram district and Puducherry. Swamis and volunteers from the Puducherry sub-centre joined the efforts in the affected areas.
On December 3, 2024, cooked meals were provided to 1,000 people, and on December 4, approximately 1,300 people were served. This distribution will continue for the next 2 to 3 days in Villupuram district.
As part of the secondary relief efforts, the Mission is also planning to distribute groceries sufficient for a family for 15 days. A survey is currently underway.
