Flood Relief Camp at Ramakrishna Advaita Ashrama, Kalady (Kerala)

Due to incessent rain and opening of the gates of Idukki Dam, there is heavy floods in Idukki and Ernakulam districts. Our Kalady ashrama (in the Ernakulam district of Kerala) started relief services in the school immediately after flag hoisting on 15 August 2018. Though the Ashrama is situated in the best height, water level reached the edge of the Ashrama boundary walls on the banks of Purna river, which started flowing inside ashrama next day onwards.

People wading through the water came to our ashrama relief camp, started in the school. More than 1800 people took shelter. Most of the people were accommodatd on the first and second floors of school building. Rich and poor alike, those who are affected came devastated. Only a few could muster some belongings and valuables. Relief materials (Mats, bed sheets, water jugs, soap, toothpaste, antiseptic liquids, etc) were distributed. Cooking services were started in the eastern side of the Ashrama. Power supplies were disrupted in many parts of the Ernakulam district. Due to the high water logging in the main roads, Kalady is completely cut off from road transport connections. Food and medical services were arranged in the relief camp. Three reputed doctors were available in the camp. Even milk has been provided to small babies and kids from the ashrama goshala.
