National Youth Day 2025: Ooty

A. Commemoration of J.J. Goodwin on 12 January 2025

The day began with a solemn ceremony honoring the life and work of J.J. Goodwin at the CSI, St. Thomas Church at 9:00 AM. J.J. Goodwin, a devoted disciple of Swami Vivekananda, is recognized for his invaluable contribution to preserving the Swami’s teachings by meticulously recording his lectures. Swami Vivekananda himself acknowledged Goodwin’s critical role, stating, “He is chosen for my work. What would I do without him! If I have a mission, he is indeed a part of it.”

Swami Satyayuktanandaji Maharaj, along with devotees, students from the Vivekananda Memorial Matric School, M. Palada, and representatives from the CSI, St. Thomas Church, including Rev. C. Jeri Rajkumar M.A.B.D., Presbyter & Chairman, and S. Christopher M.A.B.D., Assistant Presbyter, paid their respects at the J.J. Goodwin Memorial.

The dignitaries emphasized the profound impact of Goodwin’s dedication, highlighting how his stenographic work ensured the accurate preservation of Swami Vivekananda’s extemporaneous speeches, which would otherwise have been lost to posterity.

B. National Youth Day Celebrations at the Math Auditorium

At 11:00 AM, the celebrations shifted to the Ramakrishna Math, Ooty, where a series of events were held to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s birthday.

  • Literary and Cultural Programs: The program commenced with the recitation of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago Address, followed by captivating cultural performances by students from the Vivekananda Memorial Matric School, M. Palada. These included speeches on “Youth and the Nation,” presentations on Swami Vivekananda’s life history, and a skit depicting his ideology.
  • Inter-School Literary and Sports Competitions: The highlight of the event was the prize distribution ceremony for the Inter-School Literary Competitions and Inter-School Sports Meet held earlier. A report on the competitions was presented, followed by a captivating cultural performance depicting the Dasavathar of Lord Sri Vishnu.
  • Guest of Honor Address: The ceremony included the lighting of the lamp, an invocation song, and a welcome address. Srimat Swami Raghaveshanandaji Maharaj delivered the benedictory address, followed by the honoring of the Chief Guest, Mr. Atul Jain, Director, Cosmic Ray Laboratory, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (National Centre of the Government of India for Nuclear Physics). Mr. Jain delivered a motivational speech, drawing upon his life experiences to inspire the audience.
  • Prize Distribution: 140 prizes, consisting of mementos and books, were awarded for the Inter-School Literary Competitions, while 48 prizes, including mementos, cups, and books, were presented for the Inter-School Sports Meet. Mr. Atul Jain, the Chief Guest, presided over the prize distribution ceremony, along with Srimat Swami Raghaveshanandaji and Swami Satyayuktanandaji.
  • Conclusion: The program concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. A sumptuous lunch prasad was served to all attendees.

Overall Participation:

Approximately 600 people participated in the various events throughout the day, including 350 students from different schools and 250 parents and devotees.

The National Youth Day celebrations at Ramakrishna Math, Ooty, were a resounding success, effectively commemorating Swami Vivekananda’s life and teachings and inspiring the youth to embrace his ideals of service, self-reliance, and spiritual growth.
