We record with sorrow the passing away of two of our brother-monks.

Swami Satyasthananda

Swami Satyasthananda (Swapan), head of Shimla centre, passed away suddenly on the evening of 7 November in a road accident.  On the fateful day, he had gone to Ambala Cantonment railway station to catch a train to Lucknow but was met with an accident near the railway station.  He was 63.  Initiated by Swami Vireshwaranandaji Maharaj, he joined the order in 1984 at Shillong centre and received sannyasa diksha from Swami Bhuteshanandaji Maharaj in 1993.  He served at the headquarters’ Law and Estate departments and at Shillong, Coimbatore Mission and Sikra-Kulingram centres as an assistant and at Silchar and Shimla centres as the head.  He was also in charge of the Pre-probationers’ Training Centre (PPTC) at Belur Math for some years.  A good sportsman in his pre-monastic days, he also had keen interest in music, and delighted in singing devotional songs and kirtans and in playing tabla and pakhawaj.  Jovial and sociable by nature, he endeared himself to all who came in contact with him.

Swami Durgeshwarananda

Swami Durgeshwarananda ji (Nirmal Maharaj) expired at Seva Pratishthan, Kolkata, on 30 November at 10 pm.  He was 79 and had been suffering from various old-age ailments for the last few years.  Initiated by Swami Nirvananandaji Maharaj, he joined the order in 1967 at Belur Math and received sannyasa diksha from Swami Vireshwaranandaji Maharaj in 1978.  He served the order at Kamarpukur, Rahara, Chandigarh, Vrindaban, Kanpur and Barisha centres. Owing to his ill health, he was brought to Arogya Bhavan, Belur Math, a few days back.  The swami was accommodative and amiable by nature.
