Summer Camp: Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Chennai, May 2024

Ramakrishna Math, Chennai

Unveiling the Theme of the Camp

The Vivekananda Cultural Centre (VCC), an unit under Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, organized “Samskar 2024”. This 16-day summer camp, held from May 7th to 22nd, catered to teenagers in grades 8-12. The inauguration ceremony began with a lamp-lighting ritual officiated by Chief Guest Shri Ganesh ji, Chief Safety Officer of the Southern Railways. Swami Ishapremananda and Swami Raghunayakananda provided an overview, capturing the essence of the camp with the theme: “Joyfully unlock creativity–Decode life!”

Exploring Traditions and Modern Skills

Over the course of the camp, students embarked on a journey that embraced both traditional Indian cultural values and modern life skills. They participated in Yoga sessions, sang Bhajans (devotional hymns), learned Vedic chanting and Shanthi mantras (peace mantras). Additionally, they delved into Swami Vivekananda’s teachings on developing a grand ideal and explored inspiring incidents from his life. Group presentations explored how to integrate these values into their daily lives.

The camp also offered sessions led by experts in cutting-edge topics like Artificial Intelligence, Goal-Setting, Data Analytics, and Time Management. To balance tradition with modern expression, students discovered the joy of creative outlets like drawing, coloring, painting, and Mandala art. Workshops included Mala Grathana (garland making), Kolam (geometric floor art), and Kreeda (traditional Indian games).

Inspiring Patriotism and Social Responsibility

Patriotism and social responsibility were emphasized through a motivational speech delivered by a senior official from the Indian Coast Guard in Chennai. This session guided the students on becoming good citizens and contributing to nation-building.

A Memorable Conclusion

The final day of the camp had two unique highlights. First, a student took on the role of Master of Ceremony (MC). Second, the entire group visited Mylapore Math, where they sang “Ramakrishna Sharanam” Bhajans in the Universal Temple of Sri Ramakrishna. The visit concluded with blessings from Swami Dharmishtananda, the Officiating Adhyaksha of Ramakrishna Math, Chennai.

Positive Feedback and Lasting Impact

Feedback from parents and students alike was overwhelmingly positive. Parents were delighted to see positive changes in their children’s attitudes, while students expressed gratitude for this enriching learning experience. Lunch Prasad was served to students, parents, and volunteers. To commemorate their participation, each participant received a laminated card with Swami Vivekananda’s motivational quotes, a Swami Vivekananda booklet, and a certificate.
