Tree Plantation Program: Jhargram, June – August 2025

Ramakrishna Mission, Jhargram, West Bengal

Ramakrishna Mission, Jhargram organized the Swami Vivekananda Tree Plantation Program (IV Year) from 15 June to 15 August 2025. Since the launch of this initiative in 2022, the Mission has been carrying out large-scale plantation drives to create environmental awareness and responsibility among students and the local community. Over the past three years, a total of 13,725 saplings were planted at various places in the district, and this year an additional 1,265 saplings were planted and distributed.

At Srirampur site, the main focus area of the plantation program, efforts were concentrated on a 2-acre degraded forest plot beside our Srirampur sub-centre, earlier used as a dumping ground. After clearing and preparing the land last year, 1,300 saplings of Sal, Mahogany, Shishu, Bakul, Jam, Sonajhuri, Arjun, Ashok and others were planted. This year, another 730 local species saplings, mostly Sal, were added, along with 150 fruit-bearing and other species at the new English Medium School campus.

At Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira (EMRS) campus, students planted around 100 fruit-bearing saplings both inside and outside the campus, thereby combining ecological care with practical environmental education.

As part of the outreach, saplings were also distributed to students of our free coaching centres at Chandabila, Odalchua, Srirampur, and Auligeria in Jhargram district. Each of the 200 students received two saplings—one Mango and another fruit tree—such as Jackfruit, Pomegranate, Lime, Sapodilla, Java Apple, Jujube, Sweet Lemon, Blackberry, or Guava. Small meetings were held with guardians and students at each centre, emphasizing the importance of tree plantation and motivating children to nurture their saplings as part of their all-round training.

Additionally, a Tree Plantation and Awareness Program was organized at Chandrika Chandra Sekhar High School (H.S.) on 26 July 2025. Nearly 400 students and 15 teachers participated in the event, and 80 saplings were planted on the school campus. A talk was also delivered on the importance of trees and environmental conservation.

Through these coordinated efforts, the Mission continues to inspire students and the local community to take active responsibility in building a greener and healthier environment.
