DROUGHT RELIEF
Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana:
Insufficient rainfall and searing heatwave has caused an acute drought situation in a major portion of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Our Belgavi centre distributed 27.86 lakh litres of drinking water among 77,200 people belonging to 16 villages in Athani and Baihongal taluks of Belgavi district from 10 to 27 April.
Our Pune centre distributed 10.90 lakh litres of drinking water among 9000 people in 3 villages of Khatav taluk in Satara district from 8 to 25 April.
Our Hyderabad and Aurangabad centres have also initiated distribution of drinking water among nearly 10,200 people in 14 villages of Warangal and Adilabad districts in Telangana and 38,000 people in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. Hyderabad centre is also making arrangements to distribute 300 litres of buttermilk per day in Nizamabad and Karimnagar districts.
CYCLONE RELIEF
FIJI: Continuing its relief work, Fiji centre distributed 355 kg rice, 355 kg pulses, 1775 kg flour, 710 kg sugar, 355 kg salt, 355 litres of edible oil, 1775 packets of noodles, 355 tins of spaghetti, 710 tins of fish, 355 tins of tomato and 355 tins of baked beans among 355 families in various settlements of Nadi from 5 to 11 April. The centre also distributed 5000 packets of agricultural seeds (10 varieties), approximately 2000 cartons of assorted clothing, 800 buckets, 100 rolls of fishing line and 125 sets of school uniforms among affected people in Rakiraki, Tavua, Taveuni, Nadi and Ba areas. The centre also provided medical relief to 1227 patients from 25 February to 25 April.
FIRE RELIEF
Assam: On 1 April, Guwahati centre distributed 130 saris, 130 dhotis, 130 t-shirts, 130 ladies garments, 130 blankets, 130 bed-sheets, 65 kg detergent powder, 260 toothpastes, 520 pouches of hair oil, 260 plates, 260 tumblers, 260 bowls and 130 jugs among 130 families affected by an accidental fire at Bishnupur locality in Guwahati.
EARTHQUAKE RELIEF & REHABILITATION:
NEPAL: Continuing its relief work among the families affected by the devastating earthquake that had struck Nepal in April 2015, Kathmandu centre distributed 11,904 blankets, 5000 foam sheets, 3607 plastic sheets and 14,237 utensil sets (each set containing 2 pots, 5 plates, 5 mugs, 5 spoons and a ladle) among 32,028 families in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Kavre and Nuwakot districts from 23 December to 24 April. Kathmandu centre also distributed 5900 bamboos and 420 CGI sheets under ‘Build Your Own House’ scheme to 122 families in Shankharapur Municipality area from 4 February to 12 April.
FLOOD REHABILITATION
Tamil Nadu:
(i) On 14 April, Chennai Math handed over 22 low-cost houses to 22 poor fishermen families who had lost their shanties in the recent flood in Pattinapakkam area in Chennai. Chennai Math centre has also undertaken the construction of 60 new low-cost houses in Meyyur village (Panrutti Taluk) of Cuddalore district for 60 poor families whose dwellings were destroyed in the recent floods. The centre is also planning the construction of a Community Hall there. Construction work is underway.
(ii) The handing over ceremony of 19 new low-cost houses and 11 additional toilet units constructed by Chennai Students’ Home for poor Irula tribals in Thathaimanji village in Ponneri taluk of Thiruvallur district took place on 6 April. On this occasion 31 cots, and a similar quantity of racks, blankets, stoves and utensil sets (each set containing 2 vessels with lids, 2 spoons, 4 plates and 4 tumblers) were distributed among 31 poor families. Steps are also being taken to construct a Community Hall in the village and also to extend the rehabilitation work to other affected areas.
(iii) Coimbatore Math centre distributed 6900 coconut leaves, 2149 casuarina poles, 41 kg coil rope, 44 kg fibre ropes, 9.5 kg nail, 4 pipes, 8 cement sheets and 20 J-bolts under ‘Build Your Own House’ scheme to 8 families in Vangivakkam village in Ponneri taluk of Thiruvallur district from 1 to 29 March.
DISTRESS RELIEF
A ‘Garments Distribution Programme’ has been started wherein new adult garments have been donated by ITC Ltd. for distribution among the poor and needy. In the present period ITC Ltd. has supplied nearly 4.6 lakh garments to 76 of our branch centres.
