In the wake of heavy rainfall and severe water inundation a major portion of West Bengal is grappling with floods, affecting thousands of families. Since 26 July, Ramakrishna Mission has initiated steps to conduct extensive primary relief service among the afflicted people in most of the districts. The relief work so far conducted by Ramakrishna Mission centres is as given below:
- Antpur centre has served cooked food to 10,190 affected people in Jangipara block and distributed 23,114 kg chira and 1179 kg sugar among 5494 families in 26 villages of Jangipara block and 4 villages in Udaynarayanpur block in Hooghly district and 3 villages in Amta-2 block in Howrah district from 2 to 9 August.
- Barasat centre distributed 320 saris, 320 tarpaulins, 318 umbrellas, 320 bed sheets and 320 utensil sets (each set containing a pot, a kadahi, 2 plates, 2 tumblers, 2 bowls, a ladle, a khunti and a bucket) among 320 affected families living in temporary relief camps in Ashoknagar and Habra Municipality in North 24 Parganas district from 31 July to 6 August.
- Belgharia centre served cooked food and distributed dry food materials among nearly 2000 affected people in Sahapur village in Burdwan district on 31 July. The centre also distributed 8963 kg chira, 2241 kg sugar, 1120 kg soybean, 166 kg milk powder and 3320 packets of biscuits among 3035 families in Nabadwip area in Nadia district from 5 to 8 August.
- Chandipur centre distributed 2640 packets of biscuits, 300 saris, 70 dhotis, 300 plastic sheets and 300 kgs of bleaching powder among 315 families belonging to 10 villages in Panskura block of East Medinipur district from 10 to 14 August.
- Contai centre distributed 1600 kgs chira, 400 kgs sugar and 900 packets of biscuit among 291 families in Kumirda and Itaberia areas in East Medinipur district.
- Gourhati centre distributed 41 saris, 55 tarpaulins, bleaching powder, etc. among 55 families in their nearby areas in Arambagh block of Hooghly district.
- Ichapur centre distributed 10,050 kg chira and 1000 kg sugar among 4750 families in 12 villages of Khanakul-I block of Hooghly district from 5 to 10 August.
- Jayrambati centre served cooked to 5624 affected people and distributed 500 kg chira, 250 kg gur and 7 kg milk powder among 326 families belonging to 15 villages in their nearby areas from 2 to 4 August. The centre also provided medical relief to 256 flood affected patients.
- Kamarpukur centre served 1020 plates of cooked food and distributed 8900 kg chira, 880 kg sugar and 427 kg biscuits among 4616 families in 37 villages of Khanakul-II, Haripal, Goghat-II and Tarakeshwar blocks of Hooghly district from 31 July to 9 August.
- Sargachhi centre served cooked food to nearly 841 affected people and distributed dry food materials, drinking water, bleaching powder, etc. among 588 flood-affected families in Nabagram, Kandi and Berhampur block of Murshidabad district from 30 July to 8 August. The centre also provided medical relief to flood affected patients.
- Naora centre served cooked food and distributed 4852 kg rice, 582 kg dal, 164.5 kg sugar, 658 kg chira, 164.5 litres of kerosene oil and 4572 kg potato among 1524 families in Canning-II block in South 24 Parganas district on 4, 7, 8 and 9 August.
- Narendrapur centre is conducting flood relief work among 917 affected families in Saratnagar block in North 24 Parganas district. Further reports are awaited.
- Rahara centre distributed 565 kg rice, 59 kg dal, 236 kg potatoes, 92 kg soybean chunks, 373 kg chira, 125.5 kg sugar, 2810 packets of biscuit, 2762 packets of milk powder, 256 bottles of Zeoline water purifier and 464 bars of soap among 783 families in Baruipur PS in South 24 Parganas district on 3 and 6 August. The centre also provided medical relief to 426 flood affected patients.
- Saradapitha centre has distributed 100 tarpaulins among 100 families living in temporary shelters in Jamalpur Block in Burdwan district and Dhaniakhali block in Hooghly district on 3 August; 2000 loaves of bread, 250 kg sugar and 2500 packets of biscuit among 500 families in Singur block in Hooghly district on 4 August; 50 kg chira, 25 kg sugar, 22.5 kg biscuits and 50 packets of ORS among 25 families in Liluah area in Howrah district on 5 August; 600 kg chira, 200 kg sugar, 100 kg milk powder and 2410 packets of biscuit among 450 families in Polba Dadpur block in Hooghly district on 5 August; 200 tarpaulins among 200 families in Amta-2 block in Howrah district on 6 August; 1615 kg rice, 750 kg chira, 421 kg sugar and 2200 packets of biscuit among 1100 families in Khanakul-II block of Hooghly district on 7 and 9 August.
- Sikra Kulingram centre 3500 kg chira, 550 kg sugar, 7000 packets of biscuits, 47000 halogen tablets and 200 kg bleaching powder among 1663 families in Chatra, Media and Charghat areas in North 24 Parganas district from 5 to 9 August.
- Tamluk centre is conducting flood relief work in Ghatal area in West Medinipur district. We are sending 2 monastic brothers to help them in this relief work. Further reports are awaited.
The relief work will be further expanded depending upon the situation.
