Indian Classical Music Programme: Gwalior, June 2022


Under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Gwalior, Indian Classical Music Programme was organized on June 11, 2022 from 6 pm to 11 pm on the occasion of the “75 Years of the Independence of India (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav)”. The chief guest in the program was Prof. Pt. Sahitya Kumar Nahar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Raja Man Singh Art and Music University, Gwalior. The honourable guest and special guest of the program were Mrs. Mrigkhi Deka, Assistant Superintendent of Police Gwalior, and Mr. Atul Tare, Managing Editor, Dainik Swadesh, Madhya Pradesh. In this Sangeet Sabha, artists like Sri Rohan Pandit, Gwalior; Dr. Abha and Dr. Vibha, Indore; Surmani Dattatreya Velankar, Bangalore; Dr. Subhadra Desai, Delhi; Mrs. Sadhna Gore, Gwalior; and Dr. Rupali Gokhale, Gwalior, rendered classical music to enthusiastic audiences.

Sri Rohan Pandit is a classical singer artist of the lineage of late Krishnarao Shankar Pandit of Gwalior Gharana and singer Meeta Pandit ji. Presently, as an executive member of Shankar Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, he is encouraging budding singers for the last five years.

Dr. Abha and Dr. Vibha Chaurasia, at present both are running their own organization “Sharda Sangeet Kala Akademi” in Indore which is affiliated to Raja Mansingh Tomar University Gwalior. On the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, they had programme in Ramakrishna Mission Bhopal, Baroda, Narayanpur, Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Delhi. Their hymn CD “Vivek Vandana” has been released from Ujjain. They are also regular artists of All India Radio. They have classical musical programmes in many cities of India, like Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Varanasi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Kerala, Kota, Limbdi, Vardman Ujjain, Gwalior etc.

Surmani Dattatreya Velankar, Gwalior is an acclaimed singer of Kirana Gharana. He is a disciple of Pt Vinayak Torvi ji. Dattatreya Velankar is an accomplished Hindustani classical artist, teacher, kirtankar, educationist and founder of the Sharada Kala Kendra, Bangalore. Dattatreya Velankar is an ‘A’ grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. It is in fact the specialty of Dattatreya Velankar that he performs both Hindustani classical singing and Katha Kirtan. His disciples are performing classical music and bhajans in various music festivals. He is serving as a Visiting Faculty at the Learnquest Academy of Music, USA.

Dr. Subhadra Desai is a professional singer of Hindustani style. She is an academician engaged in music education and research. She has performed in the US, UK, Germany, Korea and Bangladesh. Dr. Subhadra Desai has taught in various institutions including Ashoka University, National Institute of Design, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and Lady Shri Ram College New Delhi. Presently she is working as Faculty of Hindustani Music at Silicon Andhra University, California.

Mrs. Sadhana Gore, born in Gwalior, was fond of classical music since childhood and received singing education from Pt. Sita Ram Sharan. She is a meritorious student who has been awarded a scholarship from Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi and holds a master’s degree in singing from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Kheragarh. She has also taken intensive training in Khayal singing from renowned singer Dr. Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit of Gwalior Gharana. Presently, Mrs. Sadhana Gore is working in All India Radio.

Dr. Rupali Gokhale is a famous singer of the new generation of Gwalior Gharana of Indian classical singing tradition. She is the disciple of Shri Vasant Aoffe of Gwalior and Madhukar Gurjar. She has also received singing art from Pt Jayant Khot and Pt Balasaheb Poonchwale of Gwalior Gharana. For the last 16 years, she is rendering her services in the field of music as the head of the music department of Madhav College, Gwalior.
