A nation is not to be judged by its weaklings called the wicked, as they are only the weeds which lag behind, but by the good, the noble, and the pure who indicate the national life-current to be flowing clear and vigorous.
Do you judge of an apple tree and the taste of its fruits by the unripe, undeveloped, worm-eaten ones that strew the ground, large even though their number be sometimes? If there is one ripe developed fruit, that one would indicate the powers, the possibility and the purpose of the apple tree and not hundreds that could not grow.

একটি দেশকে সেই দেশের দুর্বল মানুষগুলির দ্বারা ধারণা করিলে চলিবে না; কারণ উহারা তো আগাছার মতো পড়িয়াই থাকে। যাহারা সৎ, উদার ও পবিত্র, তাহাদের দ্বারাই জাতীয় জীবনের নির্মল ও সতেজ প্রবাহ নিরূপিত হয় ।
একটি আপেল গাছ ও তাহার ফলের গুণাগুণ বিচার করিতে হইলে কি যে-সকল অপক্ক অপরিণত কীটদষ্ট ফল মাটিতে ইতস্ততঃ বিক্ষিপ্ত অবস্থায় পড়িয়া থাকে, তাহাদের সাহায্য লও? যদিও কখন কখন তাহারাই সংখ্যায় অধিক? যদি একটি সুপক্ক ও পরিপুষ্ট ফল পাওয়া যায়, তবে সেই একটির দ্বারাই ঐ আপেল গাছের শক্তি সম্ভাবনা ও উদ্দেশ্য অনুমতি হয়, যে শত শত ফল অপরিণত রহিয়া গিয়াছে, তাহাদের দ্বারা নহে।
