Personalia

Revered President Maharaj will be visiting Balaram Mandir and Swamiji’s Ancestral House from 12 to 17 June.

Swami Suhitanandaji will visit the following centres in Kolkata: Kathamrita Bhavan and Shyampukur Bati from 11 to 15 June; and Baghbazar centre from 26 to 30 June.

Swami Bhajananandaji is at Belur Math.  He visited Coimbatore and Mysuru from 2 to 6 May.

Swami Girishanandaji is scheduled to visit Agartala and Imphal from 10 to 24 June, and Balaram Mandir from 28 to 30 June.

Swami Divyanandaji will be visiting Guwahati and Kharupetia from 8 to 15 June, Bardhaman on 16 and 17 June, Garbeta from 21 to 23 June, Narendrapur (Kolkata) from 26 to 29 June, and Bardhaman again on 30 June.

Swami Vimalatmanandaji will visit Jayrambati and Kamarpukur from 8 to 29 June.

All of them are keeping well.

 


Headquarters

 

The 128th Foundation Day of the Ramakrishna Mission was celebrated at Belur Math on 1 May.  Revered President Maharaj chaired the programme.  Swami Suhitanandaji, Swami Bhajananandaji, Swami Girishanandaji, the General Secretary and a few others spoke.  About 2000 monks and devotees attended the programme.

The following dignitaries visited Belur Math: Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, on 21 May; Sri Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, on 22 May; Sri La Ganesan, Governor of Nagaland, on 25 May; and Sri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Law & Justice, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture, on 28 May.

 


New Branch Centres

A new Mission centre has been started in Haflong, Assam, following the taking over of Sri Ramakrishna Seva Samity, Haflong, in February.

A day-long programme was held in this connection on 10 May in which many dignitaries, including two state ministers of Assam, and 350 devotees participated.  The Seva Samity was founded in 1945.

A new Math centre has been started in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, following the taking over of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Adhyatmik Kendra, in March.

News of Branch Centres in India

The following buildings of Narainpur centre were inaugurated: (i) staff quarters at Akabeda tribal development centre on 21 March, (ii) a grain warehouse on the main campus on 29 March, (iii) a hostel building at Kachhapal tribal development centre on 1 April, (iv) staff quarters at Kundla tribal development centre on 22 May, and (v) a building for the paediatric ward on the main campus on 23 May.

Narainpur centre hosted Swami Vivekananda Under-20 Men’s National Football Championship from 12 April to 22 May.  Thirty-two teams representing 27 states and 5 union territories played in the tournament held under the aegis of All India Football Federation.  The Delhi team won the championship.

Swami Vimalatmanandaji opened the new building for the higher secondary section of our Manasadwip school on 10 May.  About 1000 people attended the function.


Revered President Maharaj consecrated the new marble statue of Sri Ramakrishna at Srinagar centre on 10 May.  Special worship, a public meeting, cultural events and a pilgrimage to sacred shrines nearby were held on 9, 10 and 11 May.  About 50 monks and 100 lay devotees took part in the ceremony.


Kharupetia centre held special worship and a public meeting on 12 May to mark the taking over of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Sevashram, Kharupetia, and the starting of a branch of the Mission there.  The General Secretary presided over the meeting.  He also inaugurated the new dining hall of the ashrama.  About 3000 people attended the programme.  This new centre was announced in the March Bulletin.


Sri P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, Governor of Goa, visited Goa centre on 16 May.


Mumbai centre concluded its year-long centenary celebration by hosting a two-day programme with special worship, public meetings and music recitals on 25 and 26 May. The  Governor of Maharashtra Sri Ramesh Bais and Swami Divyanandaji graced the occasion.  About 150 monks and 2600 devotees participated in the celebration.


Sri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, visited Baghbazar Math and Swamiji’s Ancestral House on 28 May.


National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded the A+ grade to the College of Education of Coimbatore Mission Vidyalaya for five years in the third cycle.


 

Ranchi Morabadi centre conducted a programme on 4 April to promote International Yoga Day.  About 2800 people practised yoga for an hour in the morning at 37 places that included hilltops, forests, rivers, lakes and fields.  A seminar on yoga for women empowerment was held at the centre’s auditorium in the afternoon.


Thanjavur centre hosted a symposium on poems of Swami Vivekananda on 27 April, and conducted a Ratha Yatra of the Holy Trio on 1 and 2 May.


Thirumukkudal centre launched a medical unit on 10 May.

The anniversary of the Netherlands centre was celebrated on 4 May with special talks and musical performances.

Sri Narayon Chandra Chanda, Land Minister, Government of Bangladesh, visited Rangpur centre, Bangladesh, on 29 April.

Values Education and Youth Programmes

The following centres held programmes mentioned against their names:

Basavanagudi, Bengaluru: A spiritual retreat for the former and present members of the centre’s Balaka Sangha on 19 May in which 300 people participated.

Gurugram: (i) Four teachers’ training programmes on values education in Delhi, Noida and Mumbai from 6 to 27 April attended by 282 teachers in all.  (ii) A workshop on 24 April in which 50 directors, principals and headmasters took part.  (iii) Two workshops for parents, including one in online mode, on 13 and 20 April in which altogether 40 parents were in attendance.  (iv) A workshop for senior citizens on 19 April attended by 8 persons.


Kalady: A sports camp from 1 April to 18 May in which 165 students received training in football, handball and kho-kho.


Rajamahendravaram: Cultural competitions based on a book on Swami Vivekananda were conducted from August to April in which a total of 53,500 students from 447 schools and 108  colleges took part.  (ii) A youths’ convention on 1 May in which 350 college students participated.  (iii) A programme on good parenting on 12 May attended by 95 parents.

Rajkot: A seminar on effective parenting on 19 May in which 197 people took part.

Swamiji’s Ancestral House, Kolkata: A residential youths’ camp from 17 to 20 May attended by 26 students.

Viveknagar, Agartala: A day-long youths’ camp in Madhya Bhubanban, Agartala, on 28 April in which 203 youths participated.

Eye Camps and other Healthcare Services

 

The following centres conducted medical camps.  A summary of the services provided by them is given below.

India:

Bankura: Eye camps from 29 March to 28 May in which a total of 878 eye patients were screened, 149 were operated on and 145 were given spectacles.

Basavanagudi, Bengaluru: A special retreat on 4 May for children affected by type-1 diabetes.  It was attended by 41 children and their parents.


Chennai Math: (i) An eye camp in Pazhaveri village, Kanchipuram district, on 28 April in which  66 patients were checked; 10 were referred for eye surgery; and 41 were given spectacles.  The camp was conducted with the help of Chengalpattu and Thirumukkudal centres. (ii) Another eye camp at Irumbedu village, in association with Chengalpattu centre, on 19 May in which 40 patients were checked; 13 were referred for eye surgery; and 10 were given spectacles.


Digboi: (i) A cataract detection camp on 28 April in which 70 people were checked and 23 of them were referred for surgery.  (ii) A medical camp on 19 May in which 46 people were treated.


Gourhati: An eye camp on 23 April: 46 patients were treated and 3 were operated on in an eye hospital.

Gurap: An eye camp on 14 May in which 63 patients were checked; subsequently, 15 of them were operated on at an eye hospital.


Jammu: (i) Held a medical camp on 17 May in which 13 doctors treated 402 patients.  (ii) Arranged cataract surgery for 9 patients on 21 May.


Kanpur: A medical camp in Koriyan village of Kanpur Nagar district on 28 April in which 120 patients were treated.


Khetri: 27 eye patients were checked on 26 May, and subsequently 13 were operated on for cataract at an eye hospital.

Lucknow: 4416 eye patients were checked and 360 were operated on and given spectacles in April.

Imphal: A class-10 student secured 1st position in Manipur state.

Viveknagar, Agartala: In a repeat of the last year’s performance, a class-10 student secured 1st position in the northeast region.  The Chief Ministers of Tripura and Assam congratulated the school on this achievement.

Twenty-one students of our Dhaka school, Bangladesh, appeared in the Secondary (Class 10) examination conducted by Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, Dhaka.  Nineteen of them passed in the first division and the remaining two in the second division.


Obituaries

We record with sorrow the passing away of two of our brother monks.


Swami Gangadharanandaji (Purnendu Maharaj) passed away at our Varanasi hospital on 2 May at 7.45 pm.  He was 81.  Initiated by Swami Madhavanandaji Maharaj, he joined the order in 1967 at Manasadwip centre and received sannyasa diksha from Swami Vireshwaranandaji Maharaj in 1977.  He rendered his services at Manasadwip, Dinajpur (in Bangladesh), Seva Pratishthan, Kankurgachhi, Varanasi Advaita Ashrama and Tamluk centres.  In Tamluk centre, he spent a long 25 years, including 11 years as the head.  Since 2012, he had been living a retired life, staying mainly at our two centres in Varanasi.  The swami was self-reliant and sociable by nature.


Swami Muktasangananda (Santosh Maharaj), aged 71, expired at Seva Pratishthan, Kolkata, on 5 May at 8.15 a.m.  Initiated by Swami Nirvananandaji Maharaj, he joined the order at Belur Math in 1977 and received sannyasa diksha from Swami Gambhiranandaji Maharaj in 1987.  He served at Belur Math (as a sevak of his guru, and as an acharya at the Veda Vidyalaya and Probationers’ Training Centre) and in Belgharia, Baghbazar, Ichapur, Karimganj, Gourhati, Shyampukur Bati and Swamiji’s Ancestral House centres.  Austere and unassuming by nature, the swami was knowledgeable in Sanskrit and Vedic literature.
