Relief Services : A Report As On 01 June 2024


Cyclone Relief

West Bengal: Cyclone Remal made landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh on 26 May and left a trail of destruction. In the wake of the disaster, the following centres conducted relief operations as detailed below:

    • Manasadwip centre provided shelter to 12 persons and helped them with food and medicines on 26 May.

    • Naora centre distributed 40 tarpaulins in Bhangar-I block of South 24 Parganas district on 29 May.

    • Narendrapur centre provided food and  shelter  to  672 persons  and  distributed  30 tarpaulins in Kakdwip, G-Plot and other areas of South 24 Parganas district on  26 and 27 May.

Fire Relief

Bihar: Following a fire incident at Kanhauli village in Muzaffarpur district on 1 May, Muzaffarpur centre provided 40 kg rice flakes (chira), 10 kg puffed rice, 10 kg sugar, 20 packets of biscuits, 20 mats, 20 bowls, 20 tumblers, 20 buckets, and 20 mugs to 20 affected families on 7 May.


Rajasthan: In the wake of a fire incident at Kurund village near Khetri on 28 April, Khetri centre provided ration, assorted garments, bars of bathing soap, detergent powder, a bed, mattresses, sandals, shoes, etc to the affected family on 5 May.


Distress Relief

The following centres distributed items shown against their names to needy people:

India:

  • Asansol: 400 notebooks and 100 school bags on 18 May.

  • Cossipore, Kolkata: 40 meals, 40 plates, 35 saris, 5 dhotis and 40 bars of bathing soap on 7 May.


  • Kalyani: 280 kg rice, 70 kg puffed rice, 35 kg pulses, 35 kg soya chunks, 140 kg potatoes, 14 kg assorted spices, and 140 packets of biscuits on 19 May.

  • Kharupetia: 300 saris, 1952  notebooks,  244  pens,  244  pencils,  244  scales,  244 erasers, 244 pencil sharpeners, and 244 umbrellas on 12 May.

  • Koyilandy: 65 saris, 65 dhotis, and cloth for 51 sets of khaki uniforms on 1  and 25 May.

  • Viveknagar, Agartala: 2545 food packets from 1 April to 19 May.

South Africa:

Phoenix: 2340 meals, 1600 kg rice, 145 kg fortified cereals, 330 kg maize meal, 20 kg wheat flour, 219 kg pasta, 110 kg porridge, 755 kg pulses, 20 kg macaroni, 45 kg soya chunks, 1578 kg assorted vegetables, 40 kg assorted spices, 210 kg salt, 475 litres cooking oil, 560 cans of tinned food, 35 kg soup powder, 5600 sachets of breakfast cereal,    2780 packets of biscuits, 153 cakes, 304 kg snacks, 440 litres fruit juice, 12 kg jam, 12 kg peanut butter, 44 kg tomato sauce, 17 kg sweetmeat, 440 loaves of bread, 190 kg assorted fruits, 1600 bars of chocolate, 15 kg Horlicks, 173 litres flavoured milk, 5 kg milk powder, 803 litres milk, 15,100 tea bags, 10 kg coffee, 280 kg sugar, 260 matchboxes, 81 sets of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils, 120 bars of bathing soap, 120 bars of laundry soap, 25 kg detergent powder, 10 litres detergent liquid, 135 tubes of toothpaste, 60 toothbrushes, 768 sanitary pads, 200 baby napkins, 707 adult napkins, 129 assorted garments, 30 blankets, 8 school bags, 300 educational toys, 5 garden tools, 20 packets of seeds, 15 guava plants, 2 prepaid electricity vouchers, and 11 solar panels with LED lights in May.


Summer Relief

India:

  • Tripura: Viveknagar centre, Agartala, distributed drinking water and candies to 10,000 pedestrians from 1 to 4 May.

  • West Bengal: Cossipore Math distributed sharbat and candies to 16,800 pedestrians from 22 April to 5 May.

Bangladesh:

  • Bagerhat centre served 500 litres of drinking water, 500 packets of biscuits and  500 packets of ORS to thirsty passers-by on 2 and 14 May.
  • Jashore centre distributed 50 table fans among as many poor families on 1 May.

Storm Rehabilitation

 

Assam: A heavy storm destroyed several houses in Karimganj district on 27 April. In response  to  the  calamity,  Karimganj centre  provided  90  corrugated  tin  sheets  and  8 riggings to 5 affected families on 2 May to help them relay the roofs of their houses.


Economic Rehabilitation

Assam: Karimganj centre gave 3 sewing machines to as many poor women in Karimganj district on 5 May.

 


Distress Rehabilitation

Chhattisgarh: Narainpur centre sunk 7 tube wells from November 2023 to April 2024 in 7 remote and tribal villages of Abujhmarh where there was an outbreak of water-borne diseases due to lack of pure drinking water.
