Cyclone Relief

Continuing their relief operations among people affected by Cyclone Remal that hit parts of India and Bangladesh on 26 May, the following centres distributed items mentioned against their names:

India: West Bengal:

  • Naora centre distributed 10,000 kg rice, 1000 kg wheat flour, 2000 kg pulses, 4000 kg potatoes, 2000 kg soya chunks, 2000 litres cooking oil and 2000 packets of biscuits to 2000 families, and 610 tarpaulins among as many families in South 24 Parganas district, from 3 to 17 June.
  • Sarisha centre distributed 6000 kg rice, 1950 kg pulses, 1410 kg chickpeas, 1166 kg soya chunks, 1166 litres cooking oil, 390 kg assorted spices, 430 kg milk powder, 1350 kg sugar, 1160 steel plates, 1153 saris, 1153 lungis, 2320 bars of bathing soap, 960 kg detergent powder and 1153 tarpaulins among 1200 families in South 24 Parganas district from 10 to 15 June.
  • Taki centre distributed 2100 kg rice, 830 kg pulses, 400 kg soya chunks, 200 litres cooking oil, 400 kg salt, 400 kg sugar, 480 packets of biscuits, 124 saris, 120 lungis,  120 mosquito nets and 410 tarpaulins among 410 families in North 24 Parganas district from 2 to 11

Bangladesh: Bagerhat centre distributed 200 kg rice, 20 kg pulses, 40 kg potatoes, 20 litres cooking oil, 40 kg salt, 40 saris, 10 dhotis and 400 packets of ORS among 40 families in Khulna district on 16 June.


Flood Relief

Assam: Heavy rainfall in southern Assam in June resulted in a flood situation in low-lying areas of In response, Karimganj centre served meals to 4500 persons and distributed 4674 kg rice, 1540 kg pulses, 3079 kg potatoes, 462 kg soya chunks, 770 litres cooking oil, 801 kg salt, 12 kg milk powder, 1540 packets of biscuits and 2563 bars of bathing soap among 1540 families in Karimganj district from 9 to 24 June.


Manipur: In response to heavy rains and floods in some parts of Manipur on 29 May, Imphal centre distributed 206 kg rice, 51 kg pulses and 24 litres of cooking oil among   24 families at Mantripukhuri in Imphal West district on 1 June.


Tornado Relief

India: West Bengal: In continuation of its relief operations among the people affected by a violent tornado that hit Jalpaiguri on 31 March, Jalpaiguri centre distributed 50 litres of drinking water, 100 kg assorted fruits, 100 bars of peanut chikki, 100 mosquito nets and 100 umbrellas among 150 families in Jalpaiguri district on 31 March and 13 June.

South Africa: A tornado swept through Tongaat town on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in the beginning of June, resulting in extensive damage to homes, schools and public infrastructure, and the loss of several lives. In its wake, Durban centre distributed 181 kg rice, 10 kg wheat flour, 52 kg pasta, 50 kg maize meal, 82 kg pulses, 145 kg porridge, 60 litres cooking oil, 1 kg salt, 97 cans of jam, 609 cans of tinned food, 188 packets of instant noodles, 12,950 tea bags, 201 litres drinking water, 94 litres milk, 73 kg sugar, 30 candles, 40 bars of bathing soap, 2 litres detergent liquid, 48 packets of toilet paper rolls, 4 baby diapers, 17 tubes of toothpaste, 110 assorted bedding  items,  688  saris,  2265 ladies’ garments, 500 shirts, 400 trousers, 615 gents’ garments and 136 pairs of shoes among 560 families in Tongaat from 8 to 12 June.


Disturbance Relief

Assam: Ethnic violence in Manipur’s Jiribam in the first week of June forced many people from the state to take refuge in the adjoining Cachar district in Assam. Considering the needs of the people thus displaced, Silchar centre distributed 9506 kg rice, 1176 kg wheat flour, 3052 kg pulses, 768 kg soya chunks, 3052 litres cooking oil, 1526 kg salt, 4704 packets of biscuits, 763 kg milk powder and 3052 bars of bathing soap among 1526 families in Cachar district from 11 to 27 June.


Train Accident Relief

West Bengal: In the wake of a train accident at Rangapani near  New Jalpaiguri Junction on 17 June, Jalpaiguri centre provided on the same day 50 food packets to as many injured persons admitted to North Bengal Medical College hospital in Each packet contained fruits, biscuits, drinking water, milk, buttermilk, and ORS.


Distress Relief

The following centres distributed items shown against their names to needy people:

India:

  • Cossipore, Kolkata: 80 meals, 80 plates, 55 saris, 25 dhotis and 80 bars of bathing soap on 3 June.
  • Hatamuniguda: 152 saris, 252 lungis, 100 towels, 252 packets of energy drink, and 504 tubes of toothpaste on 7 and 9 June.
  • Jalpaiguri: 146 meals and 96 saris on 1 May.
  • Kalyani: 280 kg rice, 70 kg puffed rice, 35 kg chira (rice flakes), 35 kg pulses, 35 kg soya chunks, 35 kg sugar, 140 kg potatoes and 14 cakes on 16 June.
  • Kharupetia: 160 assorted garments on 13 June.
  • Koyilandy: 5400 notebooks, 1200 pens, 600 geometry boxes, 600 school bags  and  600 umbrellas from 14 to 18 June.
  • Krishnanagar: 70 meals, 3 kg tamarind, 32 packets of ready-mix sweetmeat, 25 kg assorted fruits, 4 kg tea powder and 16 room fresheners on 7 June.
  • Madurai: 46 kg pulses, 46 kg semolina, 46 litres cooking oil, 9 kg chilli powder, 23 kg sambar powder, 23 kg tamarind, 46 kg sugar and 46 bars of bathing soap on 22 June.
  • Pala: 440 notebooks, 44 water bottles, 44 school bags and 44 umbrellas on 31 May.
  • Thanjavur: 20 sets of school uniforms and 1850 notebooks on 20 and 24 June.
  • Thiruvalla: 112 notebooks, 112 geometry boxes, 300 school bags, 300 tiffin boxes and 300 umbrellas from 12 to 18 June.
  • Viveknagar, Agartala: 1850 food packets from 20 May to 25 June.

Nepal: Kathmandu: 204 notebooks, 153  pens,  200  pencils,  83  geometry  boxes  and  115 school bags  on 5 and 20 June.   The centre  also provided 60 kg rice, 2 kg pulses and  8 litres of milk to a school in Bhaktapur and refilled a gas cylinder to support the midday meal for 123 students.

South Africa:

  • Durban: 1943 meals, 820 kg rice, 289 kg wheat flour, 129 kg pasta, 422 kg maize meal, 713 kg pulses, 270 kg assorted vegetables, 20 kg soya chunks, 258 kg porridge, 408 litres cooking oil, 322 kg salt, 322 cans of jam, 778 cans of tinned food, 88 kg assorted fruits, 150 packets of soup, 34,000 tea bags, 258 litres milk, 398 kg sugar, 200 matchboxes, 154 bars of bathing soap, 378 bars of laundry soap and 100 tubes of toothpaste in May and June.
  • Phoenix: 1250 kg rice, 145 kg fortified cereals, 128 kg maize meal, 20 kg wheat flour, 171 kg pasta, 105 kg porridge, 580 kg pulses, 20 kg macaroni, 40 kg soya chunks, 1434 kg assorted vegetables, 30 kg assorted spices, 116 kg salt, 345 litres cooking oil, 614 cans of tinned food,  30  kg  soup  powder,  5600  sachets  of  breakfast  cereal,  3732 packets of biscuits, 150 cakes, 378 kg snacks, 385 litres fruit juice, 12 kg jam, 11 kg peanut butter, 28 kg tomato sauce, 1 kg pasta sauce, 12 kg sweetmeat, 265 loaves of bread, 670 kg assorted fruits, 800 bars of chocolate, 15 kg Horlicks, 350 litres drinking water, 218 litres flavoured milk, 539 litres milk, 11,800 tea bags, 5 kg coffee, 240 kg sugar, 230 matchboxes, 30 men’s toiletry packs (each pack containing a hat, socks, shaving blades, a nail clipper, a bar of soap, a toothbrush and a toothpaste tube), 142 bars of bathing soap, 115 bars of laundry soap, 26 kg detergent powder, 12 litres detergent liquid, 20 litres body lotion, 139 tubes of toothpaste, 84 toothbrushes, 768 sanitary pads, 760 adult napkins, 100 assorted garments, 100 blankets, 23 school bags, 300 educational toys, 21 packets of seeds, 2 prepaid electricity vouchers, and 6 solar panels with LED lights in June.

Summer Relief

Odisha:

    • Bhubaneswar centre served 5200 litres of buttermilk, mango juice and energy drinks to 10,000 pedestrians from 2 May to 1 June.
    • Cuttack centre distributed 1,19,600 glasses of buttermilk and energy drinks to thirsty passers-by from 30 April to 13 June.
    • Hatamuniguda centre served 30,153 glasses of sharbat to thirsty passers-by from 15 April to 17 June.

Tamil Nadu:

  • Chennai Mission Ashrama served 23,520 litres of buttermilk to 73,500 wayfarers from 1 to 31 May.
  • Chennai Students’ Home served 6000 litres of buttermilk to 23,700 pedestrians from 8 May to 5 June.
  • Salem centre served 5100 litres of buttermilk to 9958 wayfarers from 1 May to 5 June.

Uttar Pradesh: Kanpur centre distributed 20,000 glasses of sharbat to thirsty passers-by from 2 to 21 June.


West Bengal: Jalpaiguri centre distributed 180 packets of buttermilk, 170 packets of ORS, and lozenges to 180 traffic personnel on 29 April and 1 May. 


Hailstorm Rehabilitation

Manipur: Imphal centre provided 20 corrugated tin sheets to a family on 1 June to repair the roof of their house damaged by a hailstorm in Imphal West district.


Infrastructural Support

Tamil Nadu: Thanjavur centre provided 25 plastic chairs to a primary school in Thanjavur district on 14 June.
