Relief & Rehabilitation Services

Ramakrishna Math conducted several relief and rehabilitation operations during the year. In all, 1,24,398 people from 54,544 families in 949 villages were benefited. Details of major operations are given below:


a. Cyclone Relief

(A) Areas affected: Tamil Nadu (Dist. Puducherry)
Relief Details: Served meals to 1100 persons and distributed 4000 litres drinking water.
No. of beneficiaries: 2100 people from 500 families in 3 villages.

(B) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dt. South 24 Parganas)
Relief Details: Distributed 10,000 kg rice, 2000 kg pulses, 1000 kg flour, 4000 kg potatoes, 2000 kg soya chunks, 2000 litres cooking oil, 2000 packets of biscuits, 650 tarpaulins, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 6840 people from 2040 families in 38 villages.


b. Flood Relief

(A) Areas affected: Gujarat (Dist. Jamnagar, Junagadh and Rajkot)
Relief Details: Served meals to 1700 persons and distributed 4050 food packets, 5800 packets of snacks, 700 packets of biscuits, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 6650 people from 1390 families in 30 villages.

(B) Areas affected: Kerala (Dist. Kozhikode)
Relief Details: Distributed 75 saris and 75 jackets.
No. of beneficiaries: 150 people from 75 families in 2 villages.

(C) Areas affected: Telangana (Dist. Khammam and Nalgonda)
Relief Details: Distributed 25,000 kg rice, 1000 kg flour, 1000 kg pulses, 2000 litres cooking oil, 100 kg assorted spices, 1000 kg salt, 1000 kg sugar, 100 kg tea powder, 2000 bars of bathing soap, 3000 bars of laundry soap, 1000 kg detergent powder, 500 blankets, 500 bedsheets, 1000 buckets, 1000 mugs, 1000 cooking bowls with lids, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 4955 people from 1000 families in 3 villages.

(D) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. Cooch Behar, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipur)
Relief Details: Distributed 14,745 kg chira, 2700 kg sugar, 110 kg puffed rice, 6548 kg rice, 1320 kg pulses, 500 kg flour, 242 kg soya chunks, 1000 kg potatoes, 912 litres cooking oil, 210 kg assorted spices, 650 kg salt, 40 kg tea powder, 15,315 packets of biscuits, 914 kg milk powder, 467 kg snacks (chanachur), 2600 packets of ORS, 400 bars of bathing soap, 260 blankets, 220 tarpaulins, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 45,325 people from 12,375 families in 75 villages.


c. Summer Relief

(A) Areas affected: Karnataka (Dist. Bengaluru)
Relief Details: Distributed 27 large umbrellas.
No. of beneficiaries: 27 people from 27 families living in a village of Karnataka.

(B) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. Kolkata)
Relief Details: Cold Drinks (sharbat) and candies to 16,800 pedestrians.
No. of beneficiaries: 16,800 people from 2800 families in 7 villages.


d. Winter Relief

A total of 24,817 blankets and 16,505 winter garments were distributed to 34,337 families and 41,551 people from 790 villages through 45 Math centres in India.


e. Rehabilitation

The following centres carried out the rehabilitation activities:

  1. Almora: Provided 40 bags of cement, 20 steel bars, 200 cubic feet of stone chips, 600 cubic feet of sand, 6000 bricks, 20 steel pipes, 2 wooden doors, 2 wooden windows, 25 kg paint, and 14 corrugated tin sheets to a poor family of Deouli village in Almora.
  2. Thanjavur: Provided 25 plastic chairs to a primary school in Thanjavur district.

Besides, the following centres distributed sewing machines:

  • Nattarampalli: 19 sewing machines
  • Pala: 10 electric sewing machines
  • Puri Math: 10 sewing machines

Ramakrishna Math spent Rs. 3.38 crore on these relief & rehabilitation services.


Ramakrishna Mission

Relief & Rehabilitation Services

Ramakrishna Mission conducted several relief and rehabilitation operations during the year. In all, 6,21,290 people from 2,19,609 families in 2770 villages benefited. Details of some of the major operations are given below:


a. Cyclone Relief

(A) Areas affected: Tamil Nadu (Dist. Puducherry and Villupuram)
Relief Details: Served meals to 5100 persons and distributed 1125 kg rice, 550 kg pulses, 325 kg flour, 325 kg semolina, 200 packets of vermicelli, 225 kg potatoes, 225 kg onions, 550 litres cooking oil, 50 kg tamarind, 245 kg assorted spices, 200 packets of pepper powder, 200 kg salt, 100 kg sugar, 20 kg tea powder, 850 packets of biscuits, 450 bed-sheets, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 5300 people from 1250 families in 5 villages.

(B) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas)
Relief Details: Distributed 8100 kg rice, 2780 kg pulses, 1410 kg chickpeas, 1566 kg soya chunks, 1366 litres cooking oil, 390 kg assorted spices, 400 kg salt, 1750 kg sugar, 430 kg milk powder, 480 packets of biscuits, 2320 bars of bathing soap, 960 kg detergent powder, 1160 serving bowls, 1277 saris, 1273 lungis, 120 mosquito nets, 1593 tarpaulins, etc. Additionally, Manasadwip and Narendrapur centres provided shelter to 684 persons and helped them with food and medicines.
No. of beneficiaries: 7203 people from 1841 families in 22 villages.


b. Tornado Relief

Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. Jalpaiguri)
Relief Details: Distributed 2500 kg rice, 1000 kg pulses, 500 kg puffed rice, 250 kg chira, 1000 kg potatoes, 500 kg soya chunks, 250 kg jaggery, 500 litres cooking oil, 500 kg salt, 550 packets of biscuits, 250 litres milk, 1100 litres drinking water, 100 kg assorted fruits, 100 bars of peanut chikki, 3000 candles, 2500 matchboxes, 500 tubes of toothpaste, 500 toothbrushes, 56 saris, 22 woollen caps, 45 foam mats, 612 mosquito nets, 100 umbrellas, 500 blankets, 390 tarpaulins, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 1250 people from 650 families in 26 villages.


c. Fire Relief

(A) Areas affected: Assam (Dist. Kamrup and Tinsukia)
Relief Details: Distributed 30 kg rice, 10 kg pulses, 5 litres cooking oil, 1 kg turmeric powder, 2 kg salt, 14 bars of bathing soap, 4 kg detergent powder, 7 bottles of hair oil, 11 saris, 7 dhotis, 3 t-shirts, 2 sporting shirts (jerseys), 2 frocks, 4 trousers, 7 towels, 7 bedsheets, 7 mosquito nets, 7 tarpaulins, 2 blankets, 5 sweaters, 2 shawls, 2 stoles, 2 sets of mirror and comb, 12 notebooks, 1 pencil box with pencil kit, 7 sets of utensils, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 33 people from 8 families in 2 villages.

(B) Areas affected: Bihar (Dist. Muzaffarpur)
Relief Details: Distributed 40 kg chira, 10 kg puffed rice, 10 kg sugar, 70 packets of biscuits, 50 loaves of bread, 70 mats, 50 bedsheets, 20 bowls, 20 tumblers, 70 buckets, 70 mugs, 50 water drums, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 70 people from 70 families in 3 villages.

(C) Areas affected: Rajasthan (Dist. Jhunjhunu)
Relief Details: Distributed ration, assorted garments, bars of bathing soap, detergent powder, a bed, mattresses, sandals, shoes, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 4 people from 1 family in 1 village.

(D) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. Darjeeling and North 24 Parganas)
Relief Details: Distributed 50 kg rice, 10 kg pulses, 3 litres cooking oil, 5 saris, 5 lungis, 5 dhotis, 2 shirts, 5 towels, 5 mosquito nets, 2 mattresses, 5 pillows, 3 pillow covers, 3 bedsheets, 5 blankets, 5 tarpaulins, 6 pressure cookers, 1 rice cooker, 2 hot pot boxes, 6 woks, 5 cooking pots (handi), 5 spatulas (khunti), 7 ladles, 14 plates, 6 serving bowls, 5 tea pans, 15 tumblers, 5 spoons, 13 buckets, 8 mugs, 5 jugs, 6 tubes of toothpaste, 10 toothbrushes, 15 bars of bathing soap, 5 kg detergent powder, 4 bars of dishwashing soap, 1 bottle of hair oil, 20 sachets of shampoo, 1 school bag, 4 notebooks, 2 pens, 1 pencil kit, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 21 people from 6 families in 2 villages.


d. Flood Relief

(A) Areas affected: Andhra Pradesh (Dist. NTR)
Relief Details: Distributed 1200 kg flour, 2400 kg semolina, 1200 kg pulses, 1200 litres cooking oil, 420 kg assorted spices, 1200 kg salt, 300 kg tamarind, 1800 saris, 1890 lungis, 1200 towels, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 5139 people from 1200 families in 1 village.

(B) Areas affected: Assam (Dist. Cachar, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Majuli and Morigaon)
Relief Details: Served meals to 4500 people and distributed 30,180 kg rice, 7782 kg pulses, 60 kg chira, 11,176 kg potatoes, 847 kg onions, 2125 kg soya chunks, 5165 litres cooking oil, 2646 kg salt, 30 kg assorted spices, 526 kg milk powder, 5660 packets of biscuits, 8790 bars of bathing soap, 950 bars of dishwashing soap, 81 kg detergent powder, 73 litres phenyl, 81 kg bleaching powder, 162 saris, 162 dhotis, 162 mosquito nets, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 40,788 people from 8886 families in 93 villages.

(C) Areas affected: Bihar (Dist. Patna)
Relief Details: Distributed 2000 kg chira, 500 kg sattu, 500 kg gram, 500 kg jaggery, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 4000 people from 1000 families in 5 villages.

(D) Areas affected: Gujarat (Dist. Surendranagar and Vadodara)
Relief Details: Served meals to 3200 persons and distributed 1600 packets of snacks, 2550 kg wheat flour, 1020 kg rice, 510 kg pulses, 20 kg potatoes, 20 kg onions, 510 litres cooking oil, 510 kg salt, 140 kg assorted spices, 510 kg sugar, 128 kg tea leaves, 5 kg snacks, 2000 bananas, 12 plastic sheets, 1000 plastic containers. Additionally, the Vadodara centre distributed educational materials to 3506 students including 6006 books, 5006 notebooks, 6012 pens, 18,036 pencils, 6012 pencil sharpeners, 6012 erasers, 3006 scales, 3006 examination boards, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 7651 people from 2330 families in 17 villages.

(E) Areas affected: Himachal Pradesh (Dist. Kullu and Shimla)
Relief Details: Distributed rice, flour, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices, sugar, tea leaves, utensils, blankets, mattresses, pillows, EPE foam sheets, tarpaulins, and other household items.
No. of beneficiaries: 294 people from 50 families in 3 villages.

(F) Areas affected: Kerala (Dist. Kozhikode)
Relief Details: Served meals to 125 persons.
No. of beneficiaries: 125 people from 25 families in 1 village.

(G) Areas affected: Manipur (Dist. Imphal West)
Relief Details: Distributed 206 kg rice, 51 kg pulses, 24 litres of cooking oil, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 106 people from 24 families in 1 village.

(H) Areas affected: Odisha (Dist. Balasore)
Relief Details: Distributed 5018 kg chira, 1008 kg jaggery, 500 saris, 400 dhotis, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 11,889 people from 3084 families in 19 villages.

(I) Areas affected: Tripura (Dist. Gomati, South Tripura, Unakoti and West Tripura)
Relief Details: Served meals to 8360 persons and distributed rice, pulses, chira, soya chunks, potatoes, cooking oil, spices, salt, biscuits, bread, milk, sugar, soap, garments, mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and other essentials. Additionally, Dhaleswar and Viveknagar centres in Agartala set up a medical camp treating 525 patients.
No. of beneficiaries: 30,128 people from 9792 families in 102 villages.

(J) Areas affected: Uttarakhand (Dist. Tehri Garhwal)
Relief Details: Distributed tarpaulins, solar lamps, gas ovens, pressure cookers, biscuits, chocolates, fruit cakes, bananas, etc. Additionally, the centre provided 4 computer sets to a college.
No. of beneficiaries: 1388 people from 347 families in 2 villages.

(K) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Malda, North 24 Parganas, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas)
Relief Details: Served meals to 6947 persons and distributed rice, chira, sugar, puffed rice, sattu, pulses, soya chunks, potatoes, cooking oil, spices, vegetables, biscuits, bread, cakes, milk powder, baby food, snacks, drinking water, soap, toiletries, saris, lungis, dhotis, mats, mosquito nets, blankets, umbrellas, tarpaulins, etc. Additionally, Medinipur centre set up a medical camp treating 201 patients.
No. of beneficiaries: 1,45,350 people from 36,459 families in 294 villages.


e. Disturbance Relief

Areas affected: Assam (Dist. Cachar)
Relief Details: Distributed 16,464 kg rice, 500 kg wheat flour, 4704 kg pulses, 1176 kg soya chunks, 4704 litres cooking oil, 2352 kg salt, 1000 packets of biscuits, 1176 kg milk powder, 3352 bars of bathing soap, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 5176 people from 1176 families in 8 villages.


f. Summer Relief

(A) Areas affected: Odisha (Dist. Cuttack, Khordha and Rayagada)
Relief Details: Bhubaneswar centre served 5200 litres of buttermilk, mango juice, and energy drinks; Cuttack centre served 2,02,100 glasses of buttermilk and energy drink; Hatamuniguda centre served 30,153 glasses of sharbat to thirsty passers-by, distributed 150 umbrellas among 150 roadside vendors and daily labourers, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 87,547 people from 14,714 families in 42 villages.

(B) Areas affected: Tamil Nadu (Dist. Chennai and Salem)
Relief Details: Served 34,620 litres of buttermilk to wayfarers.
No. of beneficiaries: 1,07,158 people from 36,383 families in 91 villages.

(C) Areas affected: Tripura (Dist. West Tripura)
Relief Details: Distributed drinking water and candies to pedestrians.
No. of beneficiaries: 10,000 people from 1665 families in 8 villages.

(D) Areas affected: Uttar Pradesh (Dist. Kanpur Nagar)
Relief Details: Served 20,000 glasses of sharbat to thirsty passers-by.
No. of beneficiaries: 6665 people from 1650 families in 8 villages.

(E) Areas affected: West Bengal (Dist. Hooghly, Jalpaiguri and Kolkata)
Relief Details: Jalpaiguri centre distributed 180 packets of buttermilk, 170 packets of ORS, and lozenges to traffic personnel. Kamarpukur centre served 2800 litres of buttermilk to wayfarers. Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House, Kolkata, distributed 884 kits containing lassi, drinking water, ORS, and lozenges among traffic police personnel and local drivers, etc.
No. of beneficiaries: 12,264 people from 4764 families in 19 villages.


g. Winter Relief

A total of 67,977 blankets and 27,440 winter garments were distributed among 87,234 families and 1,19,537 people in 1989 villages through 91 branch centres in India.


h. Mahakumbha Mela Relief

Prayagraj centre: Distributed 5000 blankets and 5000 jackets to wandering monks and sanitation workers.


i. Gangasagar Mela Relief

  1. Seva Pratishthan hospital: Extended round-the-clock medical service on the Mela grounds. In all, 6080 patients were treated, out of which 172 received indoor medical care. The centre also distributed 180 blankets among the pilgrims.
  2. Manasadwip centre: Provided board and lodging to 444 pilgrims at its unit in Gangasagar.
  3. Headquarters: Distributed 500 blankets among the pilgrims.

j. Economic / General Rehabilitation

  1. Guwahati centre: Distributed 12 sewing machines and 8 handloom machines (tantsals).
  2. Imphal centre: Provided 20 corrugated tin sheets to a family in Imphal West district.
  3. Indore centre: Provided 74 tables, 310 desks, 24 chairs, 25 vinyl flooring sheets, 5 trunks, 32 green boards, 2 bookcases, 5 Bluetooth speaker sets, 7 almirahs, 7 ceiling fans, 2 water tanks, 11 water jars, 177 plates, and 24 tumblers among 27 schools in Khargone and Khandwa districts.
  4. Jalpaiguri centre: Distributed 500 coconut seedlings, 2500 betel nut seedlings, 450 lemon seedlings, 450 guava seedlings, and 1000 tezpatta (bay leaf) seedlings to 500 families to mitigate the damage by a violent tornado.
  5. Sribhumi (Karimganj) centre: (a) Distributed 3 sewing machines (b) Provided 1476 corrugated tin sheets and 158 riggings among 83 storm-affected families.
  6. Khetri centre: Distributed 80 sewing machines.
  7. Manasadwip centre: Rebuilt two houses in Gangasagar destroyed by Cyclone Remal and handed them over to the families.
  8. Mumbai centre: Provided 3 medical kits to ASHA workers in 3 villages, excavated a well, and installed a solar-powered drinking water system at Biraripada village in Palghar district. The centre also opened a tailoring training school for women at Kodghar village in Raigad district.
  9. Narainpur centre: Installed 10 tube wells in 10 remote tribal villages of Abujhmarh.
  10. Ranchi Morabadi centre: Re-laid the roof of a needy family’s house in Ranchi district with 8 asbestos sheets and built two toilets in Khunti and Ranchi districts.
  11. Salem centre: Distributed 2 wheelchairs, 14 walkers, ointment, cotton rolls, and surgical bandages to 2 government rehabilitation homes.

Ramakrishna Mission spent Rs. 8.21 crore on relief & rehabilitation services.
