Cyclone Nivar

Very severe cyclonic storm Nivar made landfall near Marakkanam in Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Thursday, 26 November 2020 and moved inside Tamilnadu causing heavy rains and strong winds in various districts.

Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home Chennai’s teams surveyed the Chennai City area in the morning of 26 Nov 2020. Although there was heavy rainfall in many places not much damage could be seen to properties. Intermittent rains and medium-speed wind were experienced in many places.

The state government has made arrangements for shelter homes etc for the affected people and cooked food was served to the people who stayed in the shelter homes.

In some places on the banks of Adyar River (south Chennai) where rains were heavy (in Tambaram 31 cms, the highest in any area in 24 hours, 26 Nov 2020) flood water and water released from a lake (Chembarambakkam) inundated poor peoples’ houses in low lying areas in West Tambaram – Anjugam Nagar and Periyar Nagar. These daily wage-earning people are staying in shelters arranged by the state government. The centre’s team could not go near the house areas because of heavy waterlogging. They met the people and it was estimated that around 650 families are affected in these areas.

01 Dec 2020: The centre conducted Nivar cyclone relief services with food articles and sanitary items distribution.

The centre surveyed Puducherry UT and Cuddalore areas and found around 1200 families in need of help. Most of these families were staying in shelters arranged by the state government during the cyclone Nivar.

The centre served 422 affected poor families each with below-mentioned articles, one set to each family in a) TN palayam, Arasankulam, Annamalainagar, Uttukattammankoil, Karikalapakkam, Kanagampalayam (all in Puducherry UT); b) 11 hamlets in Chidambaram taluk of Cuddalore dt; c) Kallur in Ponneri taluk in Thiruvallur dt.

Food articles: rice-1kg, rava-1kg, atta-1kg, vermicelli-1kg, sugar-2kgs, toor dal-1kg, bengal-gram dal-1kg, moong dal-1kg, fried gram-1kg, oil-1ltr, salt-1kg, mustard, cumin, turmeric powder and chili powder -100gms each; Sanitary items: bathing and washing soap-1set, toothpaste and brush-1set — worth Rs.1000 were distributed to each family.

29 Nov 2020: The centre conducted Nivar cyclone relief services with food articles and sanitary items distribution.

The centre was able to serve 184 affected poor families each with below-mentioned articles, one set to each family living in Anjugam Nagar in West Tambaram, Chengalpattu Dt.

Food items: rice-1kg, rava-1kg, atta-1kg, vermicelli-1kg, sugar-2kgs, toor dal-1kg, bengal-gram dal-1kg, moong dal-1kg, fried gram-1kg, oil-1ltr, salt-1kg, mustard, cumin, turmeric powder and chili powder -100gms each.

Sanitary items: bathing and washing soap-1set, toothpaste and brush-1set were distributed to each family.
