Field Demonstration of Paddy Variety: Ranchi, July 2026

Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Morabadi, Ranchi, has launched a specialized field demonstration program showcasing the Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR) technology. Sponsored and guided by the ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, this initiative marks a pioneering research and demonstration effort by KVK Ranchi. For the first time in the Ranchi district, the cultivation of the CR-807 paddy variety is being heavily studied on upland fields, utilizing advanced chemical weed control methods to optimize crop management.

Project Scope and Implementation

As part of this collaborative program, KVK Ranchi successfully rolled out the direct seeding demonstration across a substantial agricultural cluster:

  • Location: Gudgudjadi Village, Mandar Block, Ranchi District.
  • Coverage: 50 acres of agricultural land.
  • Beneficiaries: 50 local farmers.
  • Methodology: The sowing was executed using advanced Zero-Tillage Machines to facilitate precise direct seeding without traditional transplanting.

Mitigating Climate Risks & Reducing Costs

The project arrives at a critical juncture, specifically designed to address severe climate uncertainties such as the El Niño effect and forecasts of deficient rainfall for the current season.

By substituting conventional water-intensive transplanting with Direct Seeding Technology, the initiative aims to achieve twin goals:

  1. Lowering Input Costs: Significantly reducing the overall cultivation expenses borne by smallholder farmers.
  2. Securing Livelihoods: Ensuring sustainable paddy yields with minimal water consumption, thereby protecting the farmers’ economic livelihood against drought-like conditions.

Expert Guidance & Community Participation

During the demonstration event, Er. O.P. Sharma, Agricultural Engineer at the institute, delivered a detailed presentation on the long-term benefits of climate-resilient farming techniques. He educated the attendees on how zero-tillage and direct seeding help conserve soil moisture and adapt to changing weather patterns.

The program saw enthusiastic attendance, with a large number of village youth and local farmers gathering to learn and adopt these modern, sustainable farming protocols.
