Ramakrishna Math, Gourhati, observed National Sports Day with great enthusiasm and sporting spirit from 28 to 30 August 2026, commemorating the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player. The three-day programme highlighted the importance of sports in promoting physical fitness, a disciplined mind and strong character.
The programme commenced on 28 August with a floral tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, followed by homage to other great sporting personalities of India. The occasion reminded the participants of the dedication, perseverance and sporting excellence of the nation’s celebrated athletes.
On 29 August, a special talk on the importance of sports in maintaining a healthy and active life was organised. All the students and teachers of the Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa (GAP) participated in the programme. The Adhyaksha Maharaj spoke about the inspiring life and remarkable achievements of Major Dhyan Chand and highlighted the values of dedication, discipline and perseverance reflected in his life. A few teachers also shared their thoughts and words of encouragement, stressing the need for regular physical activity and maintaining good health.
The three-day celebration concluded on 30 August with two football matches held at the ground of Gourhati Haradas Institution. The first match was played among the GAP students, while the second was an exciting encounter between Netaji Sporting Club and Parabagnan Milan Sangha. The matches generated considerable enthusiasm among the players and spectators and provided a fitting conclusion to the National Sports Day observance.
The celebration served as an inspiring reminder that sports are not merely a means of physical exercise but also an effective way of cultivating discipline, teamwork, perseverance, confidence and a spirit of healthy competition. Through these activities, the students were encouraged to lead healthy, active and purposeful lives.
