Activities 2017-18 : Relief Work


The Mission and Math conducted several relief and rehabilitation operations during the year. Details of some operations are given below.

Distress Relief

Our branch centres distributed the following items to poor and needy people in their respective areas: 2,59,657 shirts/T-shirts, 1,58,572 trousers/denims, 34,549 saris, 12,621 dhotis, 9526 school bags, 41,393 belts & wallets, 5405 socks & mufflers, 11,268 shoes, 2137 mosquito-nets, 11,680 kg flour, 5145 kg rice, 200 kg dalia, 1,212 kg dal, 852 kg edible oil, 415 kg salt, 17 kg baby food, 54 packets of biscuits, 259 kg glucose powder, 367 kg nutrimix, 83 kg milk powder, 100 stoves, 21,009 notebooks, 4211 exercise books, 16,898 pens, 5,098 bars of bathing soap, 650 bottles of hair oil, 215 kg washing powder, 1 lakh halogen tablets, etc.


Cyclone Relief

Our centres in Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Ramharipur and Naora distributed the following items to 3228 families affected by Ockhi and other cyclonic storms: 4200 plates of cooked food, 14,700 kg rice, 2720 kg dal, 2720 kg salt, 22 kg dry chillies, 735 kg edible oil, 110 kg sugar, 550 kg tea leaves, 220 coconuts, 3000 loaves of bread, 2650 kg sugar, 1250 kg suji, 875 kg assorted spices, 1250 packets of candles,1250 matchboxes, 618 asbestos sheets, 256 matkas (ridge covers), 388 chalkaths (wooden beams), 457 batams (long wooden sticks), 201 tarpaulins and 63 CGI


Fire Relief

In response to nine accidental fires, our centres in Aalo, Itanagar and Bhubaneswar distributed the following items among 240 affected families: 589 blankets, 100 saris, 127 sets of utensils (containing plates, cooking pots, etc), 216 kg rice, 96 kg dal, 48 litres of edible oil, 48 kg salt, 48 kg chira, 48 kg muri, 12 kg tea leaves, 48 kg sugar,etc.


Winter Relief

A total of 59,098 blankets and 2,27,429 winter garments were distributed among poor people through 102 branch centres in India.


Landslide Relief

In response to two landslides in West Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, Aalo centre distributed 27 blankets, 5 sets of utensils (containing plates, cooking pots, etc) and stationery items (notebooks, pens, etc) among 5 affected


Rehabilitation Work

Bamunmura centre built a house for a needy family staying near the

In the wake of the Cyclone Ockhi, Chennai Math distributed 5170 asbestos sheets and 1480 roof tiles among 620 cyclone- affected

Chennai Students’ Home desilted 8 ponds and 3 wells, sunk 7 cement-ring wells, 58 bore-wells and 7 deep bore-wells, and installed 43 hand-pumps in Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts, benefitting nearly 7485 families and 300

Puri Mission centre distributed 14 cycle-carts and 3 cycle- rickshaws.

Rahara centre distributed 3 cycle-rickshaws, a tricycle and a rickshaw van.

Saradapitha centre installed two arsenic-and-iron removal water purifier plants at Manikchak village in Malda district and Sandelerbil village in North 24-Parganas

The following centres distributed  187 sewing machines in all: Chandipur (6), Khetri (114), Nattarampalli (44), Ponnampet (14), Rahara (9).

A sum of Rs. 43.52 crore was spent on relief and rehabilitation operations to help 10,52,633 people of 4,61,685 families in 6724 villages.
