In response to the nationwide National Sports Day 2026 campaign, “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat,” Ramakrishna Math, Dakshineshwar, organised a three-day programme from 28 to 30 August 2026. The campaign, initiated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, aims to promote sports, physical fitness and an active lifestyle, particularly among the younger generation.
The Dakshineshwar Ashrama organised a series of activities involving students, youth volunteers and local sports enthusiasts, with emphasis on fitness, discipline, teamwork and the harmonious development of body and mind.
Day 1 – 28 August 2026
The programme commenced at 4.30 p.m. at the Ashrama with Vedic chanting, followed by the Salutation Mantras to Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Flowers were then reverentially offered to the Holy Trio and to the portrait of Major Dhyan Chand, whose birth anniversary is observed as National Sports Day.
Swami Ishavratananda delivered the Welcome Address. Sri Uttam Ghosh spoke on the inspiring life and achievements of Major Dhyan Chand, highlighting his dedication, discipline and contribution to Indian hockey. Nilarnav Banerjee, a student, delivered a short talk on the importance of sports in student life and their role in developing discipline, confidence, teamwork and a healthy personality.
The programme concluded with an impressive Yogasana demonstration by the students and youth volunteers of the Ashrama, showcasing physical fitness, concentration and self-discipline. Sri Tamal Kanti Bose proposed the Vote of Thanks.
Day 2 – 29 August 2026
On National Sports Day, the second day of the celebration featured a spirited football match at the D.Y.M.A. Ground. The match began at 4.30 p.m. in the presence of revered monks of the Math, who encouraged the players and ceremonially participated in the kick-off.
The match was played with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship and concluded with a thrilling 7–6 victory for D.Y.M.A. As a gesture of encouragement, the Ashrama presented two footballs to the participating teams. Refreshments and tiffin were also provided to the players.
The event promoted healthy competition, friendship and teamwork while encouraging young people to take an active interest in sports and physical fitness.
Day 3 – 30 August 2026
The three-day observance concluded with a Cycle Rally through Ariadaha and Dakshineshwar. Around 15 young people participated enthusiastically, carrying the message of fitness, unity and national pride to the local community.
The rally commenced in the morning, passed through important local routes and returned to the premises of Ramakrishna Math, Dakshineswar. The participants displayed enthusiasm and camaraderie throughout the event. On their return, fruit juice was served to the participants.
Conclusion
The three-day celebration provided an opportunity to participate in the nationwide “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat” campaign while promoting the values of fitness, sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and unity among students and youth.
The programmes also reflected the inspiring ideals of Swami Vivekananda, who emphasised strength, courage and the all-round development of the individual. Through a harmonious combination of spiritual observances and physical activities such as yogasana, football and cycling, the celebration conveyed the importance of developing a healthy body, a disciplined mind and a strong character.
The enthusiastic participation of students, youth volunteers, local sports enthusiasts and other young people made the National Sports Day observance meaningful and memorable.
