The birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player, is observed every year on 29 August as National Sports Day, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian hockey and the nation’s sporting heritage.
To commemorate National Sports Day 2026, Ramakrishna Math, Thanjavur, organised a series of programmes on 28 and 29 August 2026 at Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli. The celebrations brought together hearing-impaired students, visually impaired students, college students and members of the public, highlighting the importance of sports in promoting a healthy, disciplined, confident and purposeful life.
Sports Meet for Hearing-Impaired Students – Thanjavur
On 28 August 2026, a special sports meet was organised for the 130 students of the Government Higher Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired, Thanjavur. The students participated enthusiastically in various sporting and recreational competitions, including Volleyball, Kabaddi, 100-metre Race, Kho-Kho, Throw Ball, Frog Race, and Lemon-and-Spoon Race.
The programme provided the students with an opportunity to display their sporting talents, develop team spirit and enjoy the spirit of healthy competition. Swami Vimurtananda of Ramakrishna Math, Thanjavur, distributed the prizes. He interacted with the students, encouraged them to develop confidence and perseverance, and blessed them for a bright and successful future.
Sports Meet for Visually Impaired Students – Thanjavur
A special sports programme was organised on 29 August 2026 for the students of the Government Higher Secondary School for the Visually Impaired, Thanjavur.
The programme began in an enthusiastic manner with the students performing 29 jumps, symbolically marking National Sports Day observed on the 29th. The students then participated with great enthusiasm in Volleyball, Cricket, Jumping Jacks, 100-metre Race, Long Jump, and Ball Throw.
The participants were provided with notebooks, A4 sheets, prizes and refreshments. Swami Vimurtananda appreciated the students for their enthusiastic participation and encouraged them to pursue their goals with confidence, determination and perseverance. He also blessed them for their future progress.
Human Chain Formation – Tiruchirappalli
On 29 August 2026, the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, National College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli, in association with Ramakrishna Math, Thanjavur, organised a Human Chain Formation at Students Road, Tiruchirappalli.
Around 200 students participated in the programme and created public awareness about the importance of sports, physical fitness, healthy living, unity, equality and social responsibility. Carrying banners and placards, the students conveyed messages encouraging regular physical activity, disciplined living, teamwork, social harmony and responsible citizenship.
The National Sports Day celebrations at Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli thus reached students from diverse backgrounds and abilities through inclusive sports activities, encouragement and public awareness initiatives. The programmes conveyed the message that sports are not merely a means of physical exercise but also a powerful way of developing confidence, discipline, perseverance, teamwork and a sense of responsibility towards society.
