Relief Services : A Report As On 01 January 2024


Cyclone Relief

Tamil Nadu: Cyclone Michaung lashed Tamil Nadu on 5 December causing floods.  In the wake of the calamity, the following centres conducted relief operations as detailed below:

  • Chennai Math served meals to 11,300 persons and distributed 700 loaves of bread, 5000 packets of biscuits, 9000 litres drinking water, 8800 candles, 8800 matchboxes, 575 kg bleaching powder, 1000 packets of mosquito coils, 1000 bars of bathing soap, 1000 mats, 1000 blankets, 200 notebooks, 100 pens, 100 pencils, 100 scales, 100 erasers, 100 pencil sharpeners and 100 geometry boxes among 5000 families in and around Chennai and Thiruvallur districts from 4 to 22 December.
  • Chennai Students’ Home served meals to 800 persons and distributed 2950 kg rice, 1475 kg pulses, 590 litres cooking oil, 295 kg assorted spices, 590 kg salt, 590 kg sugar and 1890 kg semolina among 591 families in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts from 9 to 25 December. Also, the centre set up a two-wheeler service camp on its campus in which 220 vehicles were repaired from 13 to 18 December.

Flood Relief

Tamil Nadu: Following heavy rains in the southern parts of the state in December, Coimbatore Mission centre distributed 1750 kg rice, 350 kg pulses, 350 kg wheat flour, 350 litres cooking oil, 390 packets of biscuits, 350 kg sugar, 338 tubes of toothpaste, 350 packets of mosquito coils, 3500 matchboxes, 2100 candles, 563 shirts, 394 dhotis, 391 ladies’ garments, 398 children’s garments, 350 mats and 350 blankets among 390 families in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts on 27 December.

Himachal Pradesh: In continuation of its relief operations among the people affected by floods and landslides in July, Shimla centre distributed 17 kg rice, 5 kg pulses, 350 kg assorted vegetables, 2 litres cooking oil, 11 kg salt, 164 kg assorted spices, 4 kg sugar, 360 packets of biscuits, 320 packets of fruit drinks, 100 tubes of toothpaste, 15 pillows and 7 tarpaulins among 120 families in Kangra district on 5 October.


Disturbance Relief

Manipur: Continuing its relief operations among the victims of ethnic clashes which began in May, Imphal centre distributed the following items from 1 to 28 December among 775 families in Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts: 200 kg rice, 150 kg pulses, 210 kg potatoes, 36 litres cooking oil,  600 packets of biscuits, 9 kg Horlicks, 29 kg infant milk, 32 kg milk powder, 10 kg tea powder, 100 kg sugar, 66  pairs of socks, 103 mats, 65 jackets, 752 blankets, 830 feet of plastic sheets, 738  notebooks, 140 pens, 80 pencils, 90 crayons, 80 pencil sharpeners, 80 erasers and miscellaneous sports items.


Fire Relief

Assam: In the wake of a fire incident in Kamrup district in November, Guwahati centre provided 20 lungis, 20 vests, 20 saris, 20 blankets, 20 mosquito nets, 20 cooking pots, 20 cooking pans, 20 pegs (khuntis) and 20 ladles to as many affected families on 2 December.

  • Garbeta: 100 lungis on 10 October.
  • Hatamuniguda: 331 saris and 465 lungis from 4 to 13 December.
  • Indore: 250 saris from 17 to 20 December.
  • Jalpaiguri: 127 saris, 1691 foam mats, 1691 mosquito nets and 1691 woollen shawls from 27 November to 27 December.

Distress Rehabilitation

Tamil NaduChennai Students’ Home built 40 huts and a community hall for tribal families in Alapakkam village of Chengalpattu district with financial aid from the Headquarters.  The huts and the hall were handed over to the families on 17 December.

West Bengal: (a) The Headquarters provided 140 bags of cement, 150 iron bars, 300 cubic feet stone chips, 650 cubic feet sand, 342 kg iron for grills, 2 wooden doors, 15 boxes of tiles and a set of commode to a poor family in Purba Medinipur district to build their house.

(b) Naora centre built a house for a poor family in the neighbourhood with financial assistance from the Headquarters.  The house was handed over to the family on 12 December.


Economic Rehabilitation

Tamil NaduThanjavur Math provided a grinder along with necessary utensils to a widow in Thanjavur on 23 December to help her earn her livelihood.

West BengalBajepratappur centre, Bardhaman, gave 160 bags of potato seeds to 300 farmers in Bardhaman district in December.
