14 June 2023 : In the wake of ethnic clashes in May, thousands of people have been internally displaced in Manipur. They have been rendered helpless and homeless, with their houses burnt, properties destroyed, and forced to leave their land. Most of these displaced people are presently given shelter in more than 350 relief camps set up by different organizations.
At this hour of dire need, Imphal centre reached out to 87 relief camps sheltering more than 12,500 displaced people from 3945 families in 5 districts. The centre distributed 7770 kg pulses, 1465 kg soya chunks, 1294 litres cooking oil, 225 kg assorted spices, 825 kg salt, 1224 packets of biscuits, 116 kg baby food, 20 kg tea powder, 153 kg infant milk, 350 kg sugar, 5384 bars of bathing soap, 401 kg detergent powder, 864 sachets of shampoo, 346 bottles of hair oil, 3499 tubes of toothpaste, 2329 toothbrushes, 80 combs, 157 baby diapers, 300 sanitary pads, 1721 ladies’ garments, 1605 cotton wrappers, 116 towels, 150 mosquito nets, 50 bed-sheets, 200 mats, 1013 blankets, 1123 plates, 1446 tumblers and 72 spoons in Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching and Thoubal districts from 10 May to 11 June.
19 May 2023 : In the wake of recent ethnic disturbances and ensuing violence, thousands of people have been internally displaced within Manipur. In addition to being rendered helpless and homeless, their houses have been burnt, their property destroyed, and they have been forced to leave their land. Many have fled for their lives, some even barefoot, with only their clothes on. It is as if they have become refugees in their own State, facing extreme hardships even for their necessities.
Most of these displaced people are currently sheltered in makeshift relief camps, numbering over 100. These camps have been spontaneously set up & run by local clubs, village leaders, youth groups, etc. by raising funds from their own sources, supported by prompt response from the general public, at large.
The Ramakrishna Mission, Imphal, has also been trying to ease the sufferings of the afflicted, by way of distributing dry ration items (consisting of pulses, salt, edible oil, soya nuggets, baby food, infant milk, etc.), hygiene kits (consisting of bathing soap, washing powder, toothpaste, toothbrush, baby diapers, etc.), utensils, as well as, local clothing items, mats, etc. to meet their most pressing needs in these critical times.
So far, we have reached out to inmates of over 40 relief camps sheltering more than 5000 displaced people from more than 7 districts. We have witnessed firsthand the misery of these distressed people and their dire need for necessities. The onset of monsoon has added to their woes, especially of women & children, as temperatures dipped down during the rains and there is an urgent additional need for warm beddings, clothing, blankets, etc.
