National Sports Day was observed at Ramakrishna Mission, Indore with due enthusiasm on 29 and 30 August 2026, in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player and Bharat Ratna awardee.
29 August 2026
The first day’s programme featured an address by Shri Manohar Singh Shekhawat, an accomplished hockey player, weightlifter, and arm wrestler, and son of the late Shri Shankar Lakshman, Olympian and former Indian hockey player. Shri Shekhawat spoke to the students on the inspiring life and extraordinary achievements of Major Dhyan Chand, drawing from the legacy of his father’s association with Indian hockey. He urged the students to cultivate a genuine interest in sports and to make physical activity a regular and integral part of their daily lives.
Swami Nirvikarananda thereafter addressed the gathering, underlining the vital importance of sports in maintaining physical health and in developing essential qualities such as sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork. He further emphasised the significant role that sports play in the formation of character and in the broader mission of nation-building.
30 August 2026
