National Sports Day was observed at Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Guwahati from 28 to 30 August 2026, through a series of sports activities and awareness programmes conducted across the Ashrama campus, in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player and Bharat Ratna awardee.

The celebrations were inaugurated at 7.30 am with Vedic chanting by the inmates of the Student’s Home and members of the Gadhadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa (GAP), followed by a floral tribute offered to the portrait of Major Dhyan Chand.
A Practical Yoga and Fitness Session was thereafter conducted by two expert faculty members from Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva Viswavidyalaya, Ulubari, Guwahati. Approximately 100 participants took part in the session, comprising children from various schools, hostel inmates of the Ashrama, members of the Ashrama Youth Cell, members of GAP, devotees, and monastic members of the Ashrama.

In the afternoon of 29 August, a friendly limited-over Cricket Tournament and a friendly Football Tournament were organised on the Ashrama campus field. A total of four teams each in cricket and football participated, comprising students from schools and inmates of the Boys’ Hostel of the Ashrama. The monastic members of the Ashrama took active part in both tournaments.

The three-day celebration concluded on 30 August with a Walk Rally, organised at 7.30 am to commemorate National Sports Day and to promote awareness of physical fitness, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle. The rally covered a distance of 2.15 kilometres, and was participated in by approximately 120 persons, including children, inmates of the Student’s Home, devotees, and monastic members of the Ashrama.
