Relief Services : A Brief Report as on 1 September 2023

India: Floods caused by heavy rains wreaked havoc in some parts of the country. In the wake of the disaster, the following centres carried out relief operations:

Himachal Pradesh: Shimla centre distributed 3200 kg rice, 3200 kg wheat flour, 640 kg pulses, 320 litres cooking oil, 320 kg salt, 107 kg assorted spices, 640 kg sugar, 33 kg tea powder, 180 ladles, 90 sets of rolling boards and pins, 90 knives, 450 tumblers, 450 plates, 90 spoons and 360 items of assorted cookware, 1600 toothbrushes, 320 tubes of toothpaste, 320 bars of bathing soap, 320 bars of washing soap, 160 kg detergent powder, 20 buckets, 20 mugs, 80 mattresses, 160 bed sheets, 750 blankets and 150 tarpaulins among 320 families in Kullu and Shimla districts in August.

Maharashtra: Mumbai centre distributed 699 kg pulses, 466 kg potatoes, 466 kg onions, 233 litres cooking oil, 233 kg salt, 93 kg assorted spices, 466 kg sugar, 58 kg tea leaves, 117 kg milk powder, 200 cooking pots, 400 plates, 200 mugs, 200 tumblers, 200 spoons and 200 items of assorted cookware, 100 buckets, 233 tubes of toothpaste, 233 bottles of hair oil, 233 bars of bathing soap, 233 bars of laundry soap, 120 tarpaulins, 120 mats, 120 bed sheets and 1000 notebooks among 233 families in Yavatmal district from 5 to 7 August.

Odisha: Kothar centre distributed 12,890 plates of food and 1807 packets of biscuits among 1807 families in Bhadrak district from 4 to 8 August.

Uttar Pradesh: Vrindaban centre served 4600 plates of food, and distributed 3400 buns, 4600 kg rice, 4600 kg wheat flour, 920 kg pulses, 920 kg salt, 760 litres cooking oil, 510 litres milk, 120 kg milk powder and 200 litres phenyl among 920 families in Vrindaban from 8 to 24 August.

Bangladesh: Relentless rains lashed a few parts of the country, causing floods and waterlogging in August.  In response to the disaster, two of our centres conducted relief operations as detailed below:

Bagerhat centre in collaboration with another institution distributed 300 kg rice, 60 kg pulses, 120 kg potatoes, 60 kg salt and 30 litres cooking oil among 60 families in Bandarban district on 18 August.

Chittagong centre distributed 3500 kg rice, 350 kg pulses, 700 kg potatoes and 350 kg salt among 350 families in Chittagong and Bandarban districts on 18 August.

Manipur: Continuing its relief operations among the victims of ethnic clashes which began in May, Imphal centre distributed the following items from 1 to 27 August in 13 relief camps in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur and Kakching districts sheltering 2300 people from 617 families: 360 kg pulses, 230 kg black grams, 210 kg soya chunks, 1668 kg potatoes, 252 litres cooking oil, 106 kg assorted spices, 70 kg dry chillies, 93 kg garlic, 278 kg onions, 510 kg sugar, 2016 packets of biscuits, 164 kg infant milk, 300  kg milk powder, 60 kg tea powder, 1058 tubes of toothpaste, 200 toothbrushes, 931 bars of bathing soap, 71 kg detergent powder, 4736 sachets of shampoo, 756 bottles of hair oil, 831 baby diapers, 147 sanitary pads, 252 towels, 30 mosquito nets, 60 bed sheets, 180 blankets, 3226 notebooks and 460 crayons.

India: The following centres distributed items shown against their names to needy people:

  • Digboi: 30 kg assorted fruits on 2 August.
  • Koyilandy: 300 blankets from 9 to 30 July, and 100 plates of food, 19 saris and 14 dhotis on 27 August.
  • Nagpur: 1007 school uniforms, 3021 notebooks, 1007 scales, 1007 pencils, 1007 erasers, 1007 pencil sharpeners and 1007 pens from 8 July to 2 August.
  • Salem: 29 kg sweetmeat and 234 packets of biscuits on 15 August.
  • Vadodara: 210 school bags, 1890 notebooks, 210 scales, 210 geometry boxes, 840 pens, 1050 pencils, 1050 pencil sharpeners, 1050 erasers and 50 calculators from 23 July to 20 August.
  • Viveknagar, Agartala: 1000 mosquito nets from 23 July to 16 August.

Bangladesh:

  • Mymensingh: 199 plates, 93 notebooks and 88 pens on 18 and 25 August.

South Africa:

  • Durban: 1805 plates of food, 346 kg rice, 198 kg wheat flour, 200 kg maize meal, 31 kg soya chunks, 403 kg pulses, 125 kg porridge, 229 litres cooking oil, 140 kg salt, 215 cans of jam, 30 bottles of peanut butter, 30 bottles of tomato sauce, 444 cans of tinned food, 125 litres fruit juice, 18,800 tea bags, 125 litres milk, 188 kg sugar, 201 matchboxes, 180 candles, 31 napkins, 10 blankets, 30 tubes of toothpaste and 120 bars of washing soap in August.
  • Phoenix: 1600 kg rice, 180 kg fortified cereals, 190 kg maize meal, 60 kg wheat flour, 190 kg pasta, 102 kg porridge, 1000 kg pulses, 65 kg soya chunks, 1935 kg assorted vegetables, 80 kg assorted spices, 270 kg salt, 1605 litres cooking oil, 530 cans of tinned food, 50 kg soup powder, 5600 breakfast cereal sachets, 2060 packets of biscuits, 150 cakes, 25 kg semolina, 502 kg snacks, 250 litres fruit juice, 12 kg sweetmeat, 291 loaves of bread, 500 kg assorted fruits, 15 kg Horlicks, 625 litres drinking water, 178 litres flavoured milk, 451 litres milk, 28,000 tea bags, 290 kg sugar, 360 matchboxes, 13 sets of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils, 20 litres sanitizer, 380 bars of bathing soap, 180 bars of washing soap, 55 kg detergent powder, 147 tubes of toothpaste, 72 toothbrushes, 640 adult napkins, 1750 assorted garments, 36 assorted bedding items, 26 blankets, 104 kg pet food, 100 pet blanket, 300 educational toys and 3 wheelchairs in August.

  • Karimganj centre distributed 19 sewing machines to as many poor women in Karimganj district on 2 and 25 August.

Bangladesh:

  • Mymensingh centre provided a sewing machine each to 4 needy women in Mymensingh district on 25 August.
