Amphan Cyclone Relief

West Bengal: The extremely severe cyclone Amphan made landfall over the West Bengal coast on 20 May and left a trail of destruction in many parts of the state and some areas of Bangladesh.  The cyclone rendered thousands of people homeless, uprooted trees and electric poles and caused inundation of several areas.  Details of the relief operations carried out by our branch centres in response to the disaster are as follows.

 

Baghbazar centre distributed 3691 tarpaulins, 10,500 kg rice, 2500 kg pulses, 7500 kg potatoes, 1000 litres cooking oil, 2000 kg muri (puffed rice), 1750 kg chira (rice flakes), 1251 kg jaggery, 2767 kg milk powder, 3000 packets of biscuits and 1000 face masks among 5000 families in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts from 21 May to 12 June.

 

Balaram Mandir, Kolkata, served 3000 plates of cooked food and distributed 1000 kg rice, 1020 kg flour, 260 kg pulses, 240 kg soya chunks, 500 kg salt, 250 litres cooking oil, 2767 kg milk powder, 400 packets of biscuits, 100 packets of detergent and 400 bars of soap among 500 families in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas districts from 27 May to 14 June.

 

Bamunmura centre distributed 439 tarpaulins, 2300 kg rice, 875 kg pulses, 400 kg soya chunks, 371 litres cooking oil, 170 kg sattu (gram flour), 2200 kg chira, 2400 cakes, 792 packets of biscuits, 43 kg milk powder, 1130 kg sugar and 403 bars of soap among 796 families in Kolkata district from 31 May to 20 June.

 

Baranagar Mission centre served 24,165 plates of cooked food among 6644 families in Kolkata from 26 May to 11 June.

 

Barasat centre distributed 12,000 kg rice, 5800 kg pulses, 1700 kg chira, 1200 kg potatoes, 1540 kg soya chunks, 3400 kg salt, 1736 litres cooking oil, 1640 kg sattu, 200 packets of biscuits, 3200 kg sugar, 600 packets of ORS, 500 matchboxes and 3800 bars of soap among 3738 families in North 24 Parganas district from 3 to15 June.

 

Barisha centre distributed 6800 kg rice, 3200 kg pulses, 7100 kg potatoes, 200 kg soya chunks, 2700 kg salt and 2741 litres cooking oil among 2949 families in South 24 Parganas district from 28 May to 1 June.

 

Belgharia centre served 8848 plates of cooked food and distributed 3500 tarpaulins, 30,500 kg rice, 16,170 kg pulses, 2400 kg potatoes, 4164 kg soya chunks, 12,804 litres cooking oil, 9100 kg salt, 15,000 kg chira, 3608 packets of biscuits, 231 kg milk powder, 8500 kg of sugar, 6500 packets of candles, 5500 saris, 5500 lungis, 17,000 bars of soap, 22,000 face masks and 44,000 sanitary napkins among 9064 families in North 24 Parganas district from 29 May to 24 June. In the medical camp held on 6 June, 473 patients were treated.

 

Contai centre distributed 538 tarpaulins, 1290 kg pulses, 6500 kg potatoes, 1350 kg soya chunks, 1339 kg onions, 675 litres cooking oil, 338 kg assorted spices, 1300 kg sugar and 180 packets of biscuits among 1498 families in Purba Medinipur district from 28 May to 16 June.

 

Gadadhar Ashrama, Kolkata, distributed 658 tarpaulins, 600 kg rice, 120 kg pulses, 600 packets of soya chunks, 300 kg salt, 150 litres cooking oil and 300 bars of soap among 958 families in Howrah and North 24 Parganas districts from 28 May to 22 June.

 

Kasundia centre, Howrah, served 3000 plates of cooked food and distributed 500 tarpaulins, 4500 kg rice, 750 kg pulses, 4950 kg potatoes, 675 kg soya chunks, 750 kg salt, 750 litres cooking oil and 1500 bars of soap among 1500 families in Howrah, Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts from 28 May to 22 June.

 

Kathamrita Bhavan centre, Kolkata, served 3480 plates of cooked food and distributed 208 tarpaulins, 295 kg rice, 100 kg flour, 120 packets of noodles, 86 kg pulses, 200 kg potatoes, 16 kg soya chunks, 22 kg onions, 30 kg salt, 100 litres cooking oil, 60 packets of milk, 72 packets of biscuits and 100 bars of soap among 298 families in Kolkata from 23 May to 15 June.

 

Manasadwip centre provided shelter to 1100 persons and served 14,337 plates of cooked food to 2865 families and distributed 36 polythene sheets, 200 kg chira, 100 kg of muri, 100 kg of sattu, 100 kg pulses, 60 kg of soya chunks, 100 litres cooking oil, 100 kg salt, 200 packets of biscuits, 40 kg milk powder and 100 kg sugar among 236 families in South 24 Parganas district from 19 May to 25 June.

 

Naora centre served 32,179 plates of cooked food and distributed 1050 tarpaulins among 1050 families and 360 kg milk powder and 980 packets of biscuits among 12,094 children in South 24 Parganas district from 24 May to 17 June.

 

Narendrapur centre served 52,760 plates of cooked food and distributed 6300 kg rice, 241 kg muri, 17,840 kg pulses, 32,810 kg potatoes, 3610 kg soya chunks, 14,327 litres cooking oil, 12,033 kg salt, 382 kg turmeric powder, 52,080 packets of biscuits, 1306 kg chire bhaja (snacks), 782 kg milk powder, 3240 kg sugar and 12,582 bars of soap among 16,681 families in North and South 24 Parganas districts and also 7491 tarpaulins to the victims in the two districts from 20 May to 25 June.

 

Rahara centre distributed 1012 tarpaulins, 10,000 kg rice, 2000 kg chira, 2010 kg pulses, 1000 kg soya chunks, 6000 kg potatoes, 1000 litres cooking oil, 2000 kg salt, 1000 kg sugar, 400 kg baby food, 24,000 packets of biscuits, 10,000 litres drinking water, 10,000 packets of ORS, 2000 face masks, 477 saris, 240 sanitary napkins, 1.6 litres liquid water purifier and 2000 bars of soap among 2762 families in North 24 Parganas district from 4 to 14 June.

 

Rajarhat Bishnupur centre served 15,200 plates of cooked food and distributed 499 tarpaulins, 1950 kg flour, 1300 kg potatoes, 325 kg pulses, 650 kg onions, 325 litres cooking oil, 325 kg salt, 650 packets of biscuits and 650 bars of soap among 650 families in North 24 Parganas district from 19 to 21 June.

 

Saradapitha centre served 25,900 plates of cooked food and distributed 250 tarpaulins, 150 saris, 277 kg rice, 205 kg chira, 692 kg pulses, 1736 kg potatoes, 94 kg soya chunks, 300 kg onions, 677 kg salt, 18 kg turmeric powder, 402 litres cooking oil, 346 kg sugar, 5206 packets of biscuits, 5000 sanitary napkins and 3553 bars of soap among 1143 families in Howrah, North 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts from 23 May to 26 June.

 

Sarisha centre served 1,12,683 plates of cooked food and distributed 5500 tarpaulins, 5000 saris, 974 dhotis, 5000 lungis, 974 uttariyas, 13,143 kg rice, 5816 kg pulses, 4629 kg potatoes, 2066 kg soya chunks, 2931 litres cooking oil and 1400 bars of soap among 2973 families in South 24 Parganas district from 24 May to 28 June.

 

Sikra Kulingram centre distributed 1055 kg rice, 50 kg muri, 40 kg semolina, 360 kg pulses, 200 kg potatoes, 98 kg soya chunks, 66 litres cooking oil, 250 kg salt, 11 kg assorted spices, 50 kg milk powder, 50 kg sugar, 200 bars of soap, 100 packets of candles and 500 matchboxes among 523 families in North 24 Parganas district from 7 to 24 June.

 

 

Swamiji’s Ancestral House centre served 7388 plates of cooked food and distributed 1445 kg pulses, 560 kg potatoes, 780 kg soya chunks, 214 kg sattu, 780 kg salt, 780 litres cooking oil, 665 packets of biscuits, 786 kg sugar and 300 kg washing powder among 798 families in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipur districts from 24 May to 19 June.

 

Taki centre served 22,690 plates of cooked food and distributed 12,944 kg rice, 3278 kg pulses, 8318 kg potatoes, 712 kg soya chunks, 1447 litres cooking oil, 2333 kg salt, 3340 packets of biscuits, 1639 kg sugar and 6176 bars of soap among 2859 families in North 24 Parganas district from 25 May to 19 June.

Amphan Cyclone Rehabilitation 

 

Manasadwip centre provided 1043 asbestos sheets, 136 GI pipes, 59 tin sheets, 10 concrete pillars, 671 feet matka (ridge covers), 22 tarpaulins, 236 bags of cement, 112 cft white sand, 1550 cft red sand, 420 cft stone chips and 354 bricks in June under ‘build your own house’ scheme to 116 families in South 24 Parganas district whose houses had been damaged by Cyclone Amphan.

Nisarga Cyclone Relief

Gujarat: The severe cyclone Nisarga made landfall on the Maharashtra coast near Alibaugh in Raigad district of Maharashtra on 3 June. Some parts of Gujarat were also affected by the cyclone.  Limbdi centre distributed 245 tarpaulins among 245 families in Limbdi from 9 to 12 June.

Distress Relief

The following branch centres distributed items, shown against their names, to needy people:

India

  • Mysuru: 353 blankets, 3555 T-shirts and 3555 trousers from 28 November to 9 February.
  • Ootacamund: 300 blankets from 21 December to 13 June.

Zambia

  • Lusaka: 100 kg powdered maize and 150 assorted garments to an orphanage on 29 June.

Economic Rehabilitation 

Under self-employment programme, Gurap centre distributed 10 sewing machines on 17 June to poor and needy people.
