COVID-19 Coronavirus Relief Services : A Brief Report as on 16 April 2020


In the wake of the global pandemic caused by the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the ensuing lockdown in India and abroad, there has been a severe disruption in normal day to day activities. The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission have initiated relief services in different parts of the world to meet the pressing need of the afflicted, especially the poor and needy, through a number of its branch centres as detailed below:

Tirupati: The centre served 1700 plates of cooked food from 1 to 14 April.

Vijayawada: The centre distributed 3955 face masks and 300 gloves among 3703 persons and 1450 kg rice, 583 kg dal, 568 kg flour, 584 kg potatoes, 583 kg onions, 300 kg salt, 292 litres cooking oil and 33 kg assorted spices among 331 families in Guntur district from 30 March to12 April.

Visakhapatnam: The centre distributed 800 packets of biscuits, 800 litres water and 800 packets of health drink, 600 hand sanitizer bottles among 1400 persons and 3108 kg rice, 36 kg dal, 372 kg potatoes, 72 kg onions, 275 kg assorted vegetables, 43 kg assorted spices and 36 litres edible oil among 236 families in Srikakulam district from 29 March to 16 April.

Karimganj: The centre distributed 8251 kg rice, 1742 kg dal, 3356 kg potatoes, 1792 kg salt, 2903 packets of biscuits, 2657 bars of soap and 1382 face masks among 1794 families in Karimganj district from 31 March to 15 April.

Silchar: The centre distributed 10,000 kg rice, 2000 kg dal, 4000 kg potatoes, 2000 kg salt, 400 litres cooking oil and 2000 bars of soap among 2000 families in Cachar district from 4 to 10 April.

Rajkot: The centre distributed 4052 kg rice, 785 kg wheat, 2737 kg flour, 1136 kg dal, 936 litres cooking oil, 1762 kg potatoes, 908 kg onions, 736 kg sugar, 352 kg assorted spices, 153 kg tea leaves, 611 kg salt, 579 packets of biscuits and 979 bars of soap among 936 families in Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Kutch districts from 30 March to 7 April.

Vadodara: The centre served 780 plates of cooked food in slums of Vadodara and distributed 3865 kg assorted fruits and vegetables, 100 litres milk packets, 1200 packets of snacks, 1000 packets of biscuits, 875 bars of soap and 680 face masks among 2365 families in Vadodara district from 31 March to 6 April.

Jamshedpur: The centre distributed 1000 kg rice, 200 kg dal, 400 kg potatoes, 100 kg salt, 200 packets of washing powder and 200 bars of soap among 200 families in Jamshedpur on 31 March and 2 April.

Ranchi Morabadi: The centre distributed 3000 leaflets for coronavirus awareness, 15,905 kg rice, 3148 kg dal, 3228 kg potatoes, 1500 kg salt, 150 kg turmeric powder, 3610 bars of soap, 1902 face masks and 5 litres of hand sanitizer among 1504 families in Ranchi from 28 March to 15 April.

Ranchi T.B. Sanatorium: The centre distributed 3500 kg rice, 1750 kg flour, 350 kg dal, 850 kg potatoes, 350 kg salt, 350 bars of soap, 350 packets of detergent powder and 60 face masks among 350 families in Ranchi district from 24 March to 15 April. An isolation ward is being set up at the hospital for coronavirus patients.

Bengaluru: The centre distributed 3500 kg rice, 600 kg dal, 600 kg jaggery, 700 kg onions, 350 kg salt, 350 litres cooking oil and 50 kg sugar among 350 families in Bengaluru from 7 to 11 April.

Davanagere: The centre distributed 30 kg rice, 145 kg jowar (sorghum), 101 kg dal, 5 kg ragi, 2.5 kg jaggery, 1000 packets of biscuits, 500 pamphlets, 2000 face masks, 10,000 packets of tissue papers, 114 gloves, 500 hand sanitizer bottles and 1000 bars of soap among 533 families in Davangere from 26 March to 13 April.

Mangalore: The centre is coordinating with the Mangalore City Corporation in sensitizing the people about the coronavirus.

Mysuru: The centre served 2400 plates of cooked food and distributed 3150 packets of biscuits, 3150 bars of soap, 3750 face masks, 1875 hand sanitizer bottles and 1875 packets of tissue papers from 26 March to 12 April.

Ponnampet: The centre has set up two wards exclusively for Coronavirus patients, served 1040 plates of cooked food and distributed 900 kg rice, 150 kg flour, 60 kg semolina, 150 kg dal, 90 kg potatoes, 90 kg onions, 150 kg salt, 75 litres cooking oil, 30 kg sambhar powder, 150 kg sugar, 300 packets of biscuits, 101 coconuts and 300 bars of soap in Kodagu district from 29 March to 10 April.

Shivanahalli: The centre is conducting awareness campaigns among the poor villagers in and around Shivanahalli and has served 1,05,750 plates of cooked food among 5000 persons among the local daily wagers from 27 March to 14 April.

Kalady: The centre distributed 5830 kg rice, 694 kg dal, 963 kg potatoes, 960 kg onions, 120 kg salt, 343 litres cooking oil, 191 kg assorted spices, 1101 bars of soap, 86 kg washing powder and 53 litres of soap solution among 1000 families in Kalady from 31 March to 7 April.

Kayamkulam: The centre distributed 600 kg rice, 250 kg flour, 25 kg dal, 250 kg onions and 250 kg of salt among 300 families in Alappuzha district on 31 March.

Koyilandy: The centre distributed 1828 kg rice, 862 kg flour, 1124 kg dal, 619 kg semolina, 120 litres cooking oil, 57 bottles of health drinks, 481 kg sugar, 34 kg assorted spices, 10 kg tea leaves, 150 gloves, 150 sanitizers and 150 face masks among 436 families in Koyilandy from 31 March and 16 April.

Kozhikode: The centre is providing temporary boarding and lodging for 21 stranded daily wagers and served them 1283 plates of cooked food from 26 March to 15 April. It also distributed 175 kg rice, 50 kg rice powder, 40 kg flour, 74 kg dal, 33 kg semolina, 65 kg salt, 31 kg assorted spices, 25 litres cooking oil, 65 kg sugar and 1.5 kg tea leaves among 65 families in Kozhikode from 13 to 15 April.

Pala: The centre served 1200 plates of cooked food and distributed 105 kg rice, 90 kg flour, 110 kg semolina, 265 kg dal, 160 kg vegetables, 28 litres cooking oil, 65 kg salt, 90 kg sugar, 10 kg assorted spices, 9 kg groundnut, 60 bars of soap, 60 packets of detergent powder, 60 bottles of hair oil, 180 packets of biscuits and 60 towels among 160 families in Kottayam district from 30 March to 9 April.

Thiruvananthapuram: The centre has set up an outpatient clinic for screening Coronavirus patients.

Thrissur: The centre distributed 294 kg dal, 196 litres cooking oil and 196 kg sugar among 98 families in Thrissur district on 11 April.

Pune: The centre distributed 3031 N-95 masks to Pune doctors’ association, and 1862 kg rice, 4552 kg flour, 1795 kg dal, 585 kg assorted spices, 558 kg rice flakes, 362 kg semolina, 634 kg sugar, 877 litre cooking oil, 323 kg groundnut, 174 kg tea leaves, 179 kg washing powder and 461 bars of soap among 751 families in Pune and Ahmednagar district from 31 March to 8 April.

Sohra (Cherrapunji): The centre distributed 3,74,575 kg rice and 74,915 kg dal among 14,983 families at their homes in East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, North Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya, and Dhubri district  in Assam from 26 March to 12 April. The centre distributed 18,018 face masks, essential medicines to 852 patients and is transporting patients from villages to health centres from 25 March to 14 March.

Kothar: The centre distributed 900 bottles of hand sanitizers among the poor villagers in Bhadrak district from 21 to 23 March.

Puri Mission: The centre distributed 1005 kg rice, 201 kg flour, 201 kg dal, 402 kg potatoes, 201 kg onions, 40 kg assorted spices, 101 litres cooking oil, 101 kg salt, 201 packets of biscuits and 402 bars of soap among 201 families in Puri district on 13 and 16 April.

Chennai Math: The centre served 10,600 plates of cooked food, distributed 6500 face masks, 1000 gloves, 2000 packets of biscuits among the general public, Corporation Sanitary workers, Greater Chennai Police and students of a blind school, and 13,600 kg rice, 4995 kg dal, 1584 kg sugar, 1200 litre cooking oil, 2750 kg salt, 1155 kg assorted spices and 150 kg tea leaves among 3020 tribal, weavers and poor families in Kanyakumari, Kanchipuram, Mayiladuthurai, Puducherry, Sivaganga, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur and Vellore districts from 26 March to 14 April.

Chennai Mission Ashrama: The centre served 940 plates of cooked food and distributed 760 PPE kits, 2050 N-95 masks to a government hospital in Kozhikode, and distributed 1250 kg rice, 100 kg wheat, 340 kg dal, 100 kg semolina, 36 kg vermicelli, 130 packets of bread, 130 packets of milk,  200 kg sugar, 100 litres cooking oil, 100 kg salt, 105 kg assorted spices, 150 kg tea leaves, 100 tubes of toothpastes, 100 toothbrushes, 100 bars of washing soap, 2277 face masks, 225 gloves, fcoo150 bedsheets and 150 towels among 100 families in Chennai from 28 March to 17 April.

Chennai Students’ Home: The centre distributed 3700 kg rice, 2838 kg flour, 1008 kg semolina, 4495 kg vermicelli, 1829 kg ragi flour, 7400 kg sugar, 17,996 kg dal, 179 kg soybeans, 3700 litres cooking oil, 3700 kg salt, 1900 kg assorted spices and 2694 metres of cloth among 3700 daily wager families and 310 face masks, 3 litres sanitizer and 1 thermal scanner to Government hospital in Tiruvallur district from 29 March to 11 April.

Coimbatore Math: The centre served 2000 plates of cooked food among 150 municipality workers and 900 cups of tea and snacks to 60 police personnel in Coimbatore district from 29 March to 11 April.

Coimbatore Mission: The centre conducted awareness campaigns in 4 panchayat areas, served 10,699 plates of cooked food and distributed 14,375 kg rice, 6636 kg dal, 2478 kg semolina, 2031 litres cooking oil, 5478 assorted groceries and 300 packets of biscuits among 2574 families in Coimbatore district on 25 March to 11 April.

Kanchipuram: The centre served 1710 plates of cooked food and distributed 6200 kg rice, 645 kg dal, 645 kg salt, 645 kg sugar, 645 litres cooking oil and 1355 kg assorted spices among 645 families from 28 March to 16 April.

Madurai: The centre distributed 40 kg rice, 50 kg dal, 20 kg cooking oil, 40 kg salt, 18 kg assorted spices and 60 bars of soap among 40 families at a slum in Madurai district on 13 and 14 April.

Malliankaranai: The centre distributed 600 kg rice, 1125 kg dal, 200 litres cooking oil, 200 kg salt, 60 kg assorted spices and 20 packets of biscuits among 200 families in Kanchipuram district from 5 to 9 April.

Nattarampalli: The centre distributed 23,236 kg rice, 3220 kg dal, 1765 litres cooking oil, 198 kg sambar powder, 1788 kg salt and 88 kg turmeric powder among 1788 families from 24 March to 14 April.
