COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Services : A Brief Report as on 01 May 2020


In the wake of the global pandemic caused by the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the ensuing lockdown in India and abroad, there has been a severe disruption in normal day to day activities. The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission have initiated relief services in different parts of the world to meet the pressing need of the afflicted, especially the poor and needy, through a number of its branch centres as detailed below:

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Port Blair centre distributed 1075 kg rice, 430 kg flour, 215 kg pulses, 430 kg potatoes, 860 packets of biscuits and 215 bars of soap among 215 families in South Andaman district from 22 to 27 April.

Andhra Pradesh

Kadapa: The centre served 1085 plates of cooked food, 1022 litres buttermilk and 300 packets of drinking water, and distributed 889 kg rice, 879 kg pulses, 647 litres cooking oil, 90 kg salt, 553 kg assorted spices, 30 kg pickles and 30 litres of handwash among 755 families in Kadapa district from 28 March to 25 April.

Tirupati: The centre served 3500 plates of cooked food from 1 to 28 April.

Vijayawada: The centre distributed 1621 kg rice, 677 kg pulses, 678 kg flour, 50 kg semolina, 645 kg potatoes, 688 kg onions, 166 kg other vegetables, 331 kg salt, 335 litres cooking oil and 40 kg chilli powder among 428 families and 3955 face masks and 300 gloves among 3703 persons in Guntur district from 30 March to 20 April.

Visakhapatnam: The centre distributed 8950 kg rice, 636 kg pulses, 1522 kg potatoes, 72 kg onions, 2790 kg other vegetables, 800 packets of biscuits, 236 kg tamarind, 115 kg assorted spices, 700 kg salt, 736 litres cooking oil, 700 water bottles, 800 packets of health drink, 800 hand sanitizer bottles, 200 gloves, 50 face masks, 400 packets of dishwashing powder and 400 bars of soap among 1756 families in Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts from 29 March to 26 April.

Arunachal Pradesh

Aalo: The centre conducted an awareness camp on 30 March and distributed 2975 kg rice, 970 kg pulses, 298 kg soya chunks, 2160 kg potatoes, 1957 kg onions, 785 litres cooking oil, 287 kg salt and 441 packets of assorted spices among 288 families in West Siang district on 11 and 17 April.

Narottam Nagar: The centre distributed 6100 kg rice, 1082 kg pulses, 1831 kg potatoes, 1022 kg onions, 920 kg salt, 912 litres cooking oil, 270 face masks, 865 bars of detergent and 754 bars of soap among 1183 families in Tirap district from 9 to 28 April.

Assam

Dibrugarh: The centre distributed 3000 kg rice, 1200 kg flour, 600 kg pulses, 800 kg potatoes, 50 kg onions, 300 litres cooking oil, 600 packets of salt, 600 packets of biscuits and 600 bars of soap among 600 families of Dibrugarh from 11 to 26 April.

Guwahati: The centre served 1000 plates of cooked food and distributed 3865 kg rice, 1119 kg pulses, 1671 kg potatoes, 1212 kg salt, 198 litres cooking oil, 337 packets of fruit cake, 514 packets of biscuits, 162 litres drinking water, 1285 face masks and 429 hand sanitizer bottles among 1309 families in Kamrup Metropolitan district from 29 March to 28 April.

Karimganj: The centre distributed 11,803 kg rice, 400 kg flour, 2910 kg pulses, 5904 kg potatoes, 3007 kg salt, 230 litres cooking oil, 5237 packets of biscuits, 3703 face masks and 4991 bars of soap among 3009 families in Karimganj district from 31 March to 25 April.

Silchar: The centre distributed 10,000 kg rice, 2000 kg pulses, 4000 kg potatoes, 2000 kg salt, 400 litres cooking oil and 2000 bars of soap among 2000 families in Cachar district from 4 to 10 April.

Bihar

Chapra: The centre distributed 3973 kg rice, 1365 kg flour, 1200 kg chira (rice flakes), 352 kg pulses, 1325 kg potatoes, 297 kg jaggery and 445 litres cooking oil among 2153 families of Saran District from 7 to 21 April.

Katihar: The centre distributed 600 kg rice, 400 kg flour, 200 kg pulses, 200 kg potatoes, 100 kg onions, 10 kg assorted spices, 200 kg salt, 200 litres cooking oil, 200 packets of biscuits, 100 kg tea leaves, 200 kg sugar, 400 face masks, 200 bars of detergent and 200 bars of soap among 200 families in Katihar district from 14 to 18 April.

Muzaffarpur: The centre organized an Online Essay Competition on Coronavirus, Our Responsibility towards Prevention and Cure for students.

Patna: The centre distributed 1000 kg rice, 200 kg pulses, 100 litres cooking oil, 200 kg sattu (powdered gram), 100 kg salt and 100 kg glucose among 200 families in Patna from 29 March to 2 April.

Chhatisgarh

Bilaspur: The centre distributed 3625 kg rice, 725 kg flour, 725 kg pulses, 100 kg potatoes, 45 kg onions, 363 litres cooking oil, 725 kg salt, 145 kg assorted spices, 192 packets of biscuits, 363 kg sugar and 725 bars of soap among 725 families in Bilaspur from 31 March to 24 April.

Narainpur: The centre served 775 plates of cooked food and distributed 1,17,784 kg rice, 6732 kg chickpeas, 6732 kg salt, 3366 kg sugar and 6732 kg jaggery among 1950 families in 42 villages of Narainpur from 1 to 28 April.

Gujarat

Porbandar: The centre distributed 825 kg flour, 700 kg rice, 100 kg bajra (a millet), 570 kg pulses, 400 kg salt, 237 litres cooking oil, 150 kg snacks, 1120 packets of biscuits, 400 kg sugar, 102 kg tea leaves, 617 bars of soap and 3 kg candies among 350 families in Porbandar from 3 to 24 April.

Rajkot: The centre distributed 6302 kg rice, 1010 kg wheat, 4837 kg flour, 1670 kg pulses, 110 kg semolina, 50 kg bajra, 2974 kg potatoes, 1128 kg onions, 375 kg assorted spices, 1005 kg salt, 110 kg jaggery, 1440 litres cooking oil, 983 packets of biscuits, 196 kg tea leaves, 1240 kg sugar and 1089 bars of soap among 1166 families and 1500 face masks among the vegetable vendors in Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Kutch districts from 30 March to 27 April.

Vadodara: The centre served 780 plates of cooked food in the slums of Vadodara and distributed 3865 kg fruits and vegetables, 1200 packets of snacks, 1000 packets of biscuits, 100 litres milk, 1056 packets of fruit juice, 1075 bars of soap and 880 face masks among 2465 families in Vadodara district from 30 March to 19 April.

Himachal Pradesh

Shimla: The centre distributed 205 kg rice, 259 kg flour, 117 kg pulses, 4 kg salt, 63 litres cooking oil, 17 litres milk and 40 packets of biscuits among 43 families in Shimla from 1 to 26 April.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu: The centre distributed 1608 kg rice, 402 kg pulses, 804 kg potatoes, 402 kg salt and 348 bars of soap among 402 families in Jammu district from 30 March to 16 April.

Srinagar: The centre distributed 1283 kg flour, 81 kg pulses, 50 kg potatoes, 50 kg onions, 17 kg soya chunks, 130 kg salt, 21 kg assorted spices, 235 litres cooking oil, 58 kg sugar, 12 kg tea leaves and 414 bars of soap among 265 families in Srinagar from 29 March to 25 April.

Jharkhand

Deoghar: The centre served 4186 plates of cooked food and distributed 968 kg rice, 242 kg pulses, 242 kg potatoes, 450 kg chira, 150 kg muri (puffed rice), 326 packets of bread, 150 kg salt and 150 bars of soap among 542 families in Deoghar from 31 March to 27 April.

Ghatshila: The centre distributed 2950 kg rice, 1770 kg pulses, 460 kg chira, 2575 kg flour, 2625 kg potatoes, 573 kg onions, 153 kg soya chunks, 1175 kg salt, 61 kg turmeric powder, 380 litres cooking oil, 710 packets of tea leaves, 660 kg sugar, 1240 packets of biscuits and 2320 bars of soap among 1180 families in East Singhbhum district from 2 to 27 April.

Jamshedpur: The centre distributed 4165 kg rice, 833 kg pulses, 1716 kg potatoes, 100 kg onions, 50 litres cooking oil, 417 kg salt, 783 packets of detergent powder and 783 bars of soap among 783 families in East Singhbhum district from 31 March to 22 April.

Jamtara: The centre distributed 735 kg pulses, 735 kg potatoes, 630 bottles of cooking oil, 210 kg salt, 210 kg detergent powder and 420 bars of soap among 210 families in Jamtara district from 19 March to 22 April.

Ranchi Morabadi: The centre distributed 6000 leaflets to spread awareness on the pandemic, and also 19,575 kg rice, 3882 kg pulses, 3568 kg potatoes, 112 kg soya chunks, 1500 kg salt, 150 kg assorted spices, 150 litres milk, 4550 bars of soap, 2584 face masks and 530 hand sanitizer bottles among 2168 families in Ranchi district from 28 March to 28 April.

Ranchi T.B. Sanatorium: The centre distributed 3500 kg rice, 1750 kg flour, 350 kg pulses, 850 kg potatoes, 350 kg salt, 350 bars of soap, 350 packets of detergent powder and 60 face masks among 350 families in Ranchi district from 24 March to 15 April. An isolation ward has been set up at the hospital for coronavirus patients.

Karnataka

Belagavi: The centre distributed 130 kg rice, 335 kg jowar (sorghum), 381 kg flour, 98 kg semolina, 126 kg pulses, 10 kg vegetables, 22 kg assorted spices, 154 litres cooking oil, 154 kg sugar, 19 kg tea leaves and 358 bars of soap among 77 families, and 771 face masks and 389 hand sanitizer bottles in Belagavi district from 2 to 28 April.

Bengaluru: The centre distributed 3500 kg rice, 600 kg pulses, 600 kg jaggery, 700 kg onions, 350 kg salt, 350 litres cooking oil and 50 kg sugar among 350 families in Bengaluru district from 7 to 11 April.

Davanagere: The centre distributed 155 kg rice, 595 kg jowar (sorghum), 332 kg pulses, 305 kg ragi (a millet), 50 kg chira, 28 kg jaggery, 100 kg sugar, 93 litres cooking oil, 1000 packets of biscuits, 500 pamphlets, 2000 face masks, 500 packets of tissue papers, 500 hand sanitizer bottles and 1000 bars of soap among 753 families in Davanagere from 26 March to 28 April.

Mangalore: The centre conducted awareness campaigns, and distributed 1900 kg rice, 350 kg pulses, 350 kg chira and 350 kg sugar among 232 families in Mangaluru from 16 to 27 April.

Mysuru: The centre served 7650 plates of cooked food and distributed 1988 kg flour, 944 kg pulses, 100 kg fried gram, 944 kg semolina, 100 kg besan (gram flour), 944 litres cooking oil, 944 kg salt, 50 kg jaggery, 3514 packets of biscuits, 236 kg tea leaves, 944 kg sugar, 1114 kg fruits, 6088 bars of soap, 1888 bars of washing soap, 4200 face masks, 2300 hand sanitizer bottles and 480 packets of tissue paper among 944 families in Mysuru district from 26 March to 28 April.

Ponnampet: The centre set up two wards for coronavirus patients, served 1040 plates of cooked food and distributed 950 kg rice, 1306 kg flour, 1216 kg semolina, 5568 kg pulses, 1445 kg potatoes, 1578 pumpkins, 1445 kg onions, 2858 kg salt, 1430 litres cooking oil, 608 kg sambar powder, 2811 packets of biscuits, 1306 kg sugar, 2456 bars of soap, 2211 packets of detergent powder, 55 tubes of toothpaste, 55 toothbrushes, 55 scrubbers and 55 bottles of hair oil among 2882 families in Kodagu district from 29 March to 27 April.

Shivanahalli: The centre served two meals a day to 2500 stranded labourers in the outskirts of Bengaluru from 27 March to 20 April (total 1,57,550 plates of cooked food).

Kerala

Haripad: The centre distributed 3760 kg rice, 939 kg pulses, 25 kg potatoes, 30 kg onions, 752 kg salt, 467 kg sugar, 478 litres cooking oil, 2 kg ghee, 1 kg dalda (hydrogenated oil) and 7 kg assorted spices among 792 families in Alappuzha district from 29 March to 30 April.

Kalady: The centre distributed 7900 kg rice, 1108 kg pulses, 3033 kg potatoes, 3030 kg onions, 534 kg salt, 1161 litres cooking oil, 1019 kg assorted spices, 2343 bars of soap, 499 kg detergent powder, 260 litres of soap solution and 1212 face masks among 1434 families in Ernakulam district from 31 March to 22 April.

Kayamkulam: The centre distributed 600 kg rice, 250 kg flour, 25 kg pulses, 250 kg onions and 250 kg of salt among 300 families in Alappuzha district on 31 March.

Koyilandy: Thecentre distributed 2210 kg rice, 1210 kg flour, 1432 kg pulses, 910 kg semolina, 120 litres cooking oil, 57 packets of Horlicks, 635 kg sugar and 30 kg assorted spices among 590 families in Kozhikode district from 12 to 18 April.

Kozhikode: The centre is providing board and lodging for 21 stranded daily wagers since 26 March. It also distributed 2045 kg rice, 741 kg rice powder, 386 kg flour, 939 kg pulses, 378 kg semolina, 756 kg salt, 308 kg assorted spices, 370 litres of cooking oil, 1000 kg sugar and 1.5 kg tea leaves among 756 families in Kozhikode district from 13 to 28 April.

Pala: The centre served 1200 plates of cooked food and distributed 105 kg rice, 90 kg flour, 100 kg semolina, 248 kg pulses, 18 kg vegetables, 28 litres cooking oil, 65 kg salt, 90 kg sugar, 10 kg assorted spices, 60 bars of soap, 60 packets of detergent powder, 60 bottles of hair oil, 180 packets of biscuits and 60 towels among 160 families in Kottayam district from 30 March to 9 April.

Thiruvalla: The centre distributed 488 kg vegetables among 75 families in Pathanamthitta district on 13 April.

Thiruvananthapuram: The centre has set up an outpatient clinic for screening Coronavirus patients.

Thrissur: The centre distributed 600 kg pulses, 400 litres cooking oil and 400 kg sugar among 200 families in Thrissur district on 11 and 19 April.

Madhya Pradesh

Indore: The centre distributed 300 kg rice, 500 kg flour and 210 kg pulses among 40 families in Indore on 7 April.

Maharashtra

Aurangabad: The centre distributed 2350 kg flour, 235 litres cooking oil, 118 kg assorted spices, 470 face masks and 470 bars of soap among 235 families, and 700 face masks and 600 packets of biscuits among local policemen in Aurangabad district from 1 to 26 April.

Mumbai:  The centre served 60,800 plates of cooked food, 15,000 water bottles along with bread, fruits and sweets which were given occasionally. The centre supplied 18,000 kg rice, 3000 litres cooking oil and 210 kg assorted spices to a community kitchen and distributed 10,905 kg rice, 10,905 kg flour, 6543 kg pulses, 2181 litres cooking oil, 2181 kg salt and 2181 kg sugar among 2181 families in Mumbai from 28 March to 29 April.

Nagpur: The centre distributed 2100 kg rice, 1200 kg flour, 400 kg pulses, 800 kg potatoes, 800 kg onions, 400 kg semolina, 520 kg assorted spices, 400 litres cooking oil, 400 kg salt, 400 kg sugar, 80 kg tea leaves, 400 packets of biscuits, 400 bars of soap and 200 face masks among 410 families in Nagpur district from 6 to 21 April.

Pune: The centre supplied 8000 N-95 masks to doctors and hospitals in Pune and distributed 3138 kg rice, 6894 kg flour, 2504 kg pulses, 918 kg assorted spices, 733 kg rice flakes, 400 kg semolina, 68 kg potatoes, 125 kg onions, 1321 litres cooking oil, 500 kg groundnut, 1069 kg sugar, 33 kg tea leaves, 140 packets of biscuits, 130 kg detergent powder and 642 bars of soap among 1222 families in Pune and Ahmednagar districts from 31 March to 23 April.

Manipur

Imphal: The centre distributed 5000 kg rice, 1000 kg pulses, 700 litres cooking oil, 250 kg of soya chunks, 400 kg salt, 622 packets of detergent powder and 1244 bars of soap among 1000 families in Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts from 20 April to 26 April.

Meghalaya

Shillong: The centre distributed 10,165 kg rice, 10,165 kg potatoes and 1727 face masks among 2033 families in East Khasi Hills district from 1 to 18 April.

Sohra (Cherrapunji):The centre distributed 7,52,755 kg rice and 1,49,725 kg pulses among 29,945 families at their homes in East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, North Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya, and Dhubri district in Assam from 25 March to 12 April. The centre also distributed 3100 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) kits and 47,882 face masks and is transporting patients from villages to health centres from 25 March onwards.

New Delhi

New Delhi: The centre served 49,236 plates of cooked food among the poor and needy in Delhi from 26 March to 29 April.

Odisha

Bhubaneswar:  The centre distributed 3000 kg rice, 900 kg pulses, 300 litres cooking oil, 1500 kg potatoes, 600 kg onions, 300 kg soya chunks, 600 kg salt, 700 face masks and 600 bars of soap among 300 families in Khurda district from 11 to 25 April.

Cuttack: The centre distributed 2100 kg rice, 500 kg pulses, 100 kg chira (rice flakes), 50 kg sugar, 800 kg potatoes, 500 kg onions, 25 kg of assorted spices, 150 litres cooking oil, 300 kg salt, 25 kg turmeric powder, 600 packets of biscuits, 100 packets of detergent powder, 500 bars of soap and 200 face masks among 300 families in Cuttack district from 18 to 28 April.

Hatamuniguda: The centre distributed 5880 kg rice, 1176 kg pulses,  591 litres cooking oil, 2352 kg potatoes,  1016 kg onions, 488 kg soya chunks, 1176 kg salt, 1181 packets of biscuits, 1066  face masks, 10 hand sanitizer bottles, 1176 detergent bars and 1176 soap bars among 1176 families in Rayagada district from 7 to 28 April.

Kothar: The centre distributed 2600 kg chira (rice flakes), 5200 notebooks, 1300 pens, 1300 pencils, 1300 erasers, 1300 rulers, 1300 tubes of toothpaste, 1300 packets of detergent powder, 2600 bars of soap and 1000 hand sanitizer bottles among 1300 students and villagers in Bhadrak district from 22 March to 25 April.

Puri Math: The centre distributed 755 kg flour, 151 kg pulses, 755 kg potatoes, 76 litres cooking oil, 76 kg salt, 151 packets of biscuits and 151 bars of soap among 151 families in Puri district from 19 to 25 April.

Puri Mission: The centre distributed 3500 kg rice, 700 kg flour, 700 kg pulses, 1400 kg potatoes, 700 kg onions, 140 kg assorted spices, 350 litres cooking oil, 350 kg salt, 700 packets of biscuits and 1400 bars of soap among 700 families in Puri district from 10 to 28 April.

Tamil Nadu

Chengalpattu: The centre distributed 2745 kg rice, 323 kg pulses, 188 kg semolina, 66 kg vermicelli, 416 litres cooking oil, 404 kg salt and 519 kg assorted spices among 546 families in Chengalpattu District from 9 to 29 April.

Coimbatore Math: The centre conducted awareness campaigns in 4 panchayat areas, served 2270 plates of cooked food and distributed 5600 kg rice, 2000 kg pulses, 800 litres cooking oil, 800 kg salt, 800 kg sugar and 640 kg assorted spices among 800 familiesin Coimbatore district from 29 March to 22 April.

Coimbatore Mission: The centre served 27,862 plates of cooked food and distributed 29,190 kg rice, 120 kg flour, 16,409 kg pulses, 2478 kg semolina, 5870 litres cooking oil, 5527 kg salt, 6270 kg assorted spices and 370 packets of biscuits among 34,275 families in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts from 31 March to 28 April.

Kanchipuram: The centre served 1710 plates of cooked food and distributed 6450 kg rice, 645 kg pulses, 645 kg salt, 645 kg sugar, 645 litres cooking oil and 1548 kg assorted spices among 645 families in Kanchipuram from 28 March to 16 April.

Madurai: The centre distributed 484 kg rice, 726 kg pulses, 242 kg semolina, 242 litres cooking oil, 459 kg salt, 220 kg assorted spices, 24 kg tea leaves, 242 tubes of toothpaste, 285 face masks and 726 bars of soap among 242 families in Madurai district from 6 to 25 April.

Malliankaranai: The centre distributed 600 kg rice, 500 kg pulses, 200 litres cooking oil, 200 kg salt, 60 kg assorted spices, 200 kg sugar and 20 packets of biscuits among 200 families in Kanchipuram district from 5 to 9 April.

Nattarampalli: The centre distributed 53,986 kg rice, 7035 kg pulses, 3739 litres cooking oil, 3762 kg salt and 581 kg assorted spices among poor 3714 families from 24 March to 28 April.

Ootacamund: The centre distributed 1731 kg flour, 1331 kg pulses, 50 kg semolina, 48 kg vermicelli, 133 litres cooking oil, 1356 kg sugar, 350 kg tea leaves and 250 packets of biscuits among 1396 families, and 200 face masks, 800 packets of detergent powder and 400 bars of soap in Nilgiris district from 2 to 29 April.

Mymensingh: The centre distributed 1005 kg rice, 402 kg pulses, 402 kg potatoes, 201 kg salt, 100 litres of cooking oil and 603 bars of soap among 201 families in Mymensingh district from 4 to 12 April.

South Africa

Durban: The centre along with its sub-centres distributed 747 food hampers containing rice, pulses, salt, cooking oil, etc. in various places in April.

Phoenix: The centre distributed 300 food hampers and vegetable packs along with nutrient cereals.  It also distributed a litre of milk and a loaf of bread to 20 families thrice a week.  The Ashrama’s clinic provided counselling services to healthcare professionals and workers.

Sri Lanka

Colombo: The centre along with its sub-centre at Batticaloa distributed 13,603 kg rice, 5376 kg flour, 719 kg pulses, 717 kg soya chunks, 1329 kg potatoes, 1387 kg onions, 224 kg noodles, 1886 kg salt, 21 kg chilli powder, 472 coconuts, 250 packets of tea leaves, 6 kg milk powder, 66 kg health drink, 2562 kg sugar, 158 packets of biscuits, 10 packets of detergent powder, 10 packets of tissue paper and 611 bars of soap among 3038 families in Colombo and Batticaloa from 2 to 25 April.

Zambia

Lusaka: The centre handed over 200 hand sanitizer bottles to the Epilepsy Association of Zambia and distributed 1250 kg maize powder, 100 kg sugar, 25 kg salt, 4 litres cooking oil and 150 bars of soap to poor people in Lusaka in April.
